The Peoples of Nizhny Novgorod

The richness of the culture of the Nizhny Novgorod land was shaped by the most varied influences that acted over millennia upon a community going about its affairs in the area where the Oka and the Volga meet — a district strategic for eastern Europe.

The wording of Kozma Minin's appeal to the townspeople has survived - "Brothers and friends, all you The Peoples of Nizhny Novgorod". So who are the peoples of Nizhny Novgorod?

Russians

Russians — the general name for the inhabitants of Russia, the Russian super-ethnos. A super-ethnos manifests itself in history as a mosaic whole. It is a community of many peoples, expressed in the dominance of a similar ideology and of shared behavioural stereotypes.

The image of the stereotypical Russian person is unthinkable without the Russian Field — a Meme that points to hyper-scale, to the fundamental absence of a final full stop in the understanding of Russia. Placing such full stops — social markers — is the heavy, centuries-long duty of Russian politicians.

Yellow Cloud

The Yellow Cloud — a Nizhny Novgorod super-action movie, a science-fiction disaster film from Kondor Film Studio). A full-length non-commercial film in the trash genre with a great many staged fights and a lot of computer graphics.

At the city of Sarov nuclear centre an incident occurs during physics experiments, as a result of which a yellow cloud grows and covers Nizhny Novgorod, where 30 years later all manner of evil creatures start to breed. Unlike King's "The Mist", the space of this film is populated mainly by numerous successful patriots who overcome difficulties by means of hand-to-hand combat.

Khokhloma technique

Khokhloma technique is a Nizhny Novgorod technique of painting and lacquering wooden objects, going back to the methods used to make old icons.

A traditional craft of the Nizhny Novgorod peasantry. It arose in the second half of the 17th century in the territory of the present-day Komerinsky District Nizhny Novgorod Region; it was named after the trading village of Khokhloma in the same region - the centre of trade in Khokhloma-painted wares in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Khokhloma painting is distinguished by an original technique of colouring wood golden without the use of gold.

The Khokhloma technique owes much to the schism in the Russian Orthodox Church (the seventeenth-century division of believers over the reforms of Patriarch Nikon) and to the flight into the forests of numerous groups of Old Believers – adherents of the former faith.

Pikshen

Pikshen, Pekshen (Erzya: Pekshnya, Pikshnya velem) is an old historical village in the Bolshoboldinsky District Nizhny Novgorod Region, 5 km from the district centre, on the site of an ancient Mordvin settlement. A visit to Pikshen, with lunch and a demonstration of Erzya rites, is part of the programme for tour groups visiting Pushkin's Boldino.

From the point of view of the native Erzya, Pikshen consists of two streets: Verepe and Alope, and Kunshka tarka — "the centre of the village"; "Vere" — upper, "Alo" — lower, "pe"— beginning and end, "kshnya" — iron. Marvel at the Pekshnyansetne!

Pikshen has a choral ensemble, "Chilisema", in whose work almost all the adult residents of the village take part, and a museum of Erzya village life and traditions of the 19th-20th centuries is being created.

Kitezh

Kitezh, (Kitesh, Kidesh), Grad Kitezh, Kitezh-grad, Greater Kitezh is a submerged invisible city of the righteous which, according to legend, lies at the bottom of Lake Svetloyar: at times a powerful sound rises from the depths of the lake, resembling the pure ringing of a bell. It lies approximately a kilometre and a half from the village of Vladimirskoye in Voskresensky District, on the river The Lyunda River, within the borders of the Nizhegorodskoye Povetluzhye nature reserve.

It is believed that Kitezh was miraculously saved from the conquerors during the Mongol-Tatar invasion of the 13th century: for Batu, who was preparing to lay siege to the settlement, the city became invisible and then sank to the bottom of Svetloyar together with all its inhabitants.

Nizhny Novgorod Fair

Nizhny Novgorod Fair, colloquially simply the Fair, is a business and exhibition complex in the Kanavinsky District Nizhny Novgorod. Official name: "Main Fair Complex". Shops, banqueting halls, exhibition pavilions, a fountain.

A historic venue for presentations and industrial forums, which since the early 1990s has laid claim to international standing. The place where the governor's balls are held. The Coat of Arms Hall of the Fair House is the most expensive venue for weddings and anniversaries in Nizhny Novgorod and the region.

The origin of the fair is connected with one of the oldest trade routes in the history of the peoples of Eurasia - the Volga route. This route linked Northern Europe, the territories that later took shape as the Hanseatic trading league - with Persia and India, before the sea route around Africa was discovered.
