Local history studies in the region have a long tradition: its foundations were laid by Khramtsovsky Nikolai Ivanovich, whose systematic descriptions of the city have not lost their significance to this day, while the writer and ethnographer Pavel Melnikov-Pechersky left extensive accounts of the everyday life and customs of the Volga region.
