Gorodets Local History Museum is the oldest museum in Gorodets (Nizhny Novgorod Region), founded in 1918 on the initiative of the local community.[1] It is housed in the 19th-century mansion of the merchant I. P. Oblayev at 11 Lenin Street.[2] It is the anchor institution of Gorodets's Museum Quarter.[1]
History and Collection
In 1921, the museum's holdings numbered just under 4,000 items — objects donated by townspeople and transferred by the nationalization commission.[1] Over time the collection grew to more than 15,000 items.[1] Among its acquisitions was part of the collection of the Gorodets collector Grigory Matveyevich Pryanishnikov: icons from his collection were kept at the museum for some time and were later transferred to the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, including the late 14th-century icon "The Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Elijah."[1]
The museum holds a number of collections of all-Russian scholarly and artistic significance. Monuments of Orthodox culture are of particular value: handwritten and early printed books, gonfalons, and icons from Gorodets churches that were destroyed. The 19th-century icon "The Feodorovskaya Mother of God with Miracles of the Image" is regarded as a true holy relic.[2] The Old Believer section holds 18 manuscripts from the Blinov collection and part of the Pryanishnikov collection.[1] Other exhibits include stuffed animals, objects from archaeological excavations of medieval Gorodets, examples of blind house carving, painted spinning-wheel bottoms, gingerbread molds, gold embroidery, and furniture.[1]
Permanent Exhibitions
The exhibition spans the period from the Middle Ages to the present day and is organized into thematic halls.[2]
- "The Market Roars Beneath the Hill…" — the Gorodets bazaar of the 19th and early 20th centuries: the large painting "Gorodets Bazaar," historical photographs of M. Gorky Street, boxes, baskets, tin containers, and other trade equipment.[2]
- Crafts of the 19th and Early 20th Centuries — examples of blind carving (frontal boards and window frames with sirin birds, pharaohs, and mermaids), painted spinning-wheel bottoms, horse yokes (duga), and original works by master carvers.[2]
- Contemporary Artistic Crafts — works by laureates of the I. E. Repin State Prize: Aristarkh Konovalov and his students Liliya Bespalova, Faina Kasatova, Lidiya Kubatkina, Aleksandra Sokolova, and Tamara Rukina; items by craftswomen of the Gorodets Stitch Embroidery Factory made in the gold-embroidery technique.[2]
- Gold Embroidery — shawls and costumes by contemporary masters, as well as items by gold embroiderers of the 18th–19th centuries.[2]
- The Merchant Class: The Bedroom of A. P. Oblayeva — authentic items donated by descendants of the Oblayev family: a bed valance, a coverlet, pillow covers, photographs of family members, and the house slippers of the merchant I. P. Oblayev.[2]
- The Merchant Class: The Oblayev Drawing Room — a grandfather clock, a table, armchairs, a gramophone, a foreign-made clock with a moving picture, and portraits of Ivan Petrovich Oblayev (the younger) and Anna Petrovna Oblayeva (née Ovchinnikova).[2]
- Old Believers — cast copper icons, lestovkas (Old Believer prayer ropes), church books, a women's prayer costume, photographs of the Assumption Chapel, and portraits of the Nizhny Novgorod merchant and patron of the arts N. A. Bugrov, who was a patron of the Gorodets Old Believers.[2]
Role in Tourist Infrastructure
The museum is part of the Gorodets Museum Quarter and is its oldest institution.[1] Official guided tours of the entire quarter can be booked right here; admission is available with the "Pushkin Card".[1] The quarter is within walking distance of Aleksandrovskaya Embankment.[1]
