Russian Field — the most famous Meme related to Russian identity. It depicts a boundless field. Together with N. V. Gogol's passage about "Rus — the troika-bird," it forms the core set of Russian archetypal images underlying the everyday life of the central Russian provinces.
The Essence of the Phenomenon
The Russian field is believed to symbolize the breadth of the Russian soul. One might also note the absence of clear boundaries and structures across this territory.
Just as dry land is small compared to the "plain of the sea," so are towns small compared to the expanse of our fields.
How It Was Written
The lyrics were written by the poet Inna Goff.
| I wrote it because I love fields. I love the Russian field because I was born in Russia. There is nothing quite like it anywhere else, I think… Just as dry land is small compared to the "plain of the sea," so are towns small compared to the expanse of our fields. Fields… This unobstructed view to the edge of the world, from behind which the sun rises in the morning and behind which it hides toward night… A golden, rustling field of ripe ears of grain was the last peaceful vision of my adolescence… |
"The authors named their song 'Russian Field,' and then, unexpectedly, even before it was heard on the radio (the song was recorded by Yuri Gulyaev), one of Frenkel's colleagues asked for the title to be changed, since this composer already had a song under that name.
One could object that it was probably not well known enough. But then again, no one could have predicted the fate of a new song (as with any other) either. The authors, as they say, met him halfway, agreed, and renamed the song "Field."
That is how it is still officially listed. But its circulation proved so powerful, and the combination of these two words so captivating, that everyone involuntarily came to call it precisely "Russian Field" (Konstantin Vanshenkin).
