Internet meme — a digital object (image, text, figure, or idea) that spreads across the Internet and is modified by users, retaining a reference to a common original source while acquiring new meanings in different contexts [1]. Nizhny Novgorod Region has given the Russian internet several such phenomena — from a cat rescue filmed by local television in 2001 to the city's nickname Sunset Capital» [2][3].
What makes a meme a meme
The defining property of a meme is not the image itself, but what is done with it. A meme is reproduced and transformed as it passes from user to user and from platform to platform; a static image or video that never changes is not a meme [1].
The form can be anything: an image, a video, an animated GIF, a phrase, a musical snippet, or a gesture. Memes move from the online world into offline life and back again, and with the emergence of rapid content-assembly tools this boundary has become almost entirely permeable [1].
Saving Private Barsik
The most famous meme from Nizhny Novgorod was born in 2001 in Sormovsky District. A cat had got stuck in a tree; a young contract soldier named Igor Novikov was called in to get it down, and a local television channel filmed the entire operation [2][4][5].
The rescue turned out to be spectacularly destructive — windows were smashed, wires torn down, and the tree itself came crashing down — yet the cat survived and, according to Novikov himself, lived on for another five years after the incident [2][5].
The forgotten footage got a second life in 2014, when blogger Stas Davydov, with an audience of over a million, featured it; the clip then spread across the internet along with derivative images and songs [5]. In 2022, Komsomolskaya Pravda tracked down the star of the video: he has a family and runs a small construction business [5].
The meme has even made it onto the map: in the 2GIS directory, "Saving Private Barsik" has its own location point in Nizhny Novgorod [4].
It was a complete surprise for me when this resurfaced. So many years have passed. I really loved the little song — "But I Saved the Cat" — absolutely incredible. A true masterpiece! [5]
Other Nizhny Novgorod stories
Nizhny Novgorod's footprint in the Russian internet doesn't come down to a single video. Some stories came from local television, others from social media [2].
| Meme | When | Origin |
|---|---|---|
| "Saving Private Barsik" | 2001, went viral in 2014 | a segment from a local TV channel in Sormovo District [2][5] |
| "Satan's Sanatorium" | 2000s | a collection of segments from the "Vecher trudnogo dnya" program on Seti-NN television [2] |
| "Alice, Take Me Home" | — | a recording of a Nizhny Novgorod resident's conversation with a voice assistant [2] |
| "How Can Anyone Live Here?" | 2021 | a segment from local television about a building on Usilova Street [2] |
| "A Devilishly Fine Phrase" | 2017 | a series of images by Nizhny Novgorod resident Eduard Malykin, captioned with a public response from city administration head Sergey Belov [2] |
Capital of Sunsets
A separate case is a nickname that grew out of an online habit and became an official brand. Nizhny Novgorod was proclaimed the Capital of Sunsets by its own residents, who posted striking photographs on social media — only afterward was the status formally bestowed on the city [3].
The phenomenon has a geography: the historic center stands on the Dyatlov Hills, which face northwest, and the best vantage points for photography are the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment and Fedorovsky Embankment [3].
The nickname also functions as a meme in its mechanics: it is picked up, repeated, and reworked; it has traveled from the internet into city life and returned in the form of photographs taken on the embankments [1][3].
