«Volga Arena» is a multipurpose ice palace on Strelka cape in Nizhny Novgorod, construction of which began in July 2022 and was completed in 2026. Construction of Volga Arena took four years in total.[1] It is the largest artificial-ice facility in Nizhny Novgorod Region and the new home venue of Torpedo Hockey Club.[2]

Construction and Specifications

Construction began in July 2022; the main work was completed in March 2026. During construction, more than two thousand workers and 60 units of specialized machinery were deployed on site.[3][4] The project was carried out by a subsidiary of Corporation for the Development of the Nizhny Novgorod Region — Ledovy Dvorets LLC. The cost of the concession grew during the construction period from approximately 15 billion to 25.2 billion rubles.[2] Under one roof, the complex houses three ice rinks: a main arena seating more than 12,000 spectators and two practice rinks. Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin described Volga Arena as the only facility in Russia with three ice arenas under one roof.[5] The general contractor for the arena's construction was Crocus JSC.[6] In addition to the main and practice arenas, the building houses a multipurpose sports hall and an acrobatics hall.[7] The arena's infrastructure can accommodate up to 13 teams simultaneously: each locker room is a self-contained unit with coaches' offices, medical rooms, massage rooms, and showers.

The locker room of hockey club Torpedo is built without a single column and covers more than 150 square meters, providing a direct line of sight to every player.[3] The total floor area of the building is 70,000 square meters; the small ice arena seats 200 spectators. One of the two practice rinks is adapted for sledge hockey — the Paralympic version of hockey for athletes with musculoskeletal impairments.[6] The seats in the stands are dark grey; Section 215 on the lower tier is designated as a VIP area with an all-inclusive service, Section 203 is for visiting team supporters, Section 214 is for spectators wishing to sit behind the visiting team's bench, and the ice resurfacing machines exit from corner Section 212.[7] The Palace is equipped to host not only hockey matches but also figure skating competitions, volleyball, and other sports; its acoustics allow it to stage large-scale concerts.[7][8] The main arena's capacity is twice that of the Sports Palace on Gagarin Avenue.[2]

Opening and hockey events

Nizhny Novgorod's Torpedo played their first preseason match at the new arena on 14 August 2026 against Moscow's Dynamo — without spectators. The match was relocated from Volga Arena to KRK Nagorny: the arena's own inspections had been completed successfully by that point, but no final decision on the documentation had yet been made.[9][2] On 7 September 2026, a test match featuring Chayka was held at the arena. That match ended with the youth team Chayka losing to Kazan's Irbis by a score of 3–5.[10] The ice arena building was officially commissioned on 17 August 2026. On 28 August 2026, President Vladimir Putin visited the arena during a working trip to Nizhny Novgorod Region.[5][6][2] Torpedo's first full home game of the 2026/2027 season was against Kazan's Ak Bars NN on 14 September 2026.

In September 2026, five of Torpedo's home matches were held at Volga Arena: in addition to the series opener against Ak Bars on 14 September, the Nizhny Novgorod residents hosted CSKA (18 September), Avangard (22 September), HC Sochi (24 September), and Salavat Yulaev (28 September).[11] The main arena has four tiers of stands: the lower tier comprises 16 sections with 4,802 seats, while the upper tier accommodates 6,799 spectators.

The upper tier is distinguished by a steep stand gradient, providing good sightlines across the rink with virtually no blind spots.[12] At the request of the management of HC Torpedo, the KHL scheduled the 2026/2027 season so that the club would play its first four games away — until the new arena received league certification. Before the start of the 2026/2027 season, Torpedo played two away pre-season matches: on August 18 against Lokomotiv in Yaroslavl, and on August 20 against Spartak in Moscow, and then took part in the Moscow Mayor's Cup.[9][13][2] Deputy Governor Berkovich Oleg noted that the venue is in high demand among organizers of various events, but that ice hockey matches remain its primary focus. Ticket prices for Torpedo matches at Volga Arena start from 400 rubles; the minimum season ticket price is 12,340 rubles (seats in section 403); dynamic pricing is retained at the arena, though its mechanism will differ from the one used at the KRK Nagorny.

Ticket sales for the first home matches of the 2026/2027 season opened on September 2, 2026; tickets could be purchased on the official HC Torpedo website and at the KRK Nagorny box offices. During the arena's preparation for opening, some technical staff — cleaners, security guards, and general laborers — reported delayed payment of their July 2026 wages. The Nizhny Novgorod Region Development Corporation stated that the general contractor had received all funds stipulated by the contract in full; at the same time, the client and concessionaire are not legally entitled to regulate the relationship between the general contractor and subcontractors, but the agency took the matter of payments to subcontractor workers under its supervision, insisting on compliance with labor legislation. The State Labor Inspectorate of Nizhny Novgorod Region launched an investigation in response to employee complaints and social media publications; the head of the agency, Ilya Moshes, stated that if violations were confirmed, the inspectorate would deploy a full set of response measures.[14][1][5][11][12][2]

Concert Activity

The first non-hockey concert event at the arena was a performance by singer Yegor Kreed, scheduled for October 26, 2026.[2] According to the gipernn.ru portal, Kreed could become the first performer to appear at the new venue in a concert format.[2]

The arena is located at the Strelka between the Sovkombank Arena football stadium and the Aleksandra Nevskogo Cathedral; the official address of the venue is 11 Strelka Street. The surrounding territory has been landscaped: it is paved with cobblestones, equipped with flowerbeds and green areas, as well as a 700-space car park.[6][15]

In that match, Torpedo defeated Ak Bars 3–2 in front of 12,350 spectators. The match was attended by Vladislav Tretyak, President of the Ice Hockey Federation of Russia, and Alexey Morozov, President of the Kontinental Hockey League. Governor Gleb Nikitin, who visited the locker room immediately after the final buzzer, noted that a number of organizational difficulties had arisen during the match: adjustments were needed to the ice and air-conditioning system to maintain the required humidity level.[16][17]
