Opening of the Volga Arena ice palace "Volga Arena" — a grand ceremony held on 14 September 2026 at the Strelka in Nizhny Novgorod: on that day the new ice palace, with a capacity of over 12,000 spectators, hosted its first official KHL championship match and became the home venue of Torpedo Hockey Club. The arena was commissioned in August 2026 — several weeks before the official opening on 14 September. On 7 September 2026 a test match was held at the arena: the Chayka youth team played against Kazan's Irbis in the regular MHL championship.[1][2][3] The opening fell in the year of the club's 80th anniversary.[2]
Opening ceremony
The arena doors opened at 17:00; photo zones operated in the lobbies and prize draws were held, with Leonid Rudenko performing on the stage in the second-floor foyer. The multimedia show began at 19:00; during the show, until the teams took to the ice, access to the arena bowl was closed.[2]
The creative concept and show content were developed by the company dreamlaser; the production was led by the Sport Producers directing team, with Alyona Bogdanova as director. The programme took audiences through the epochs of the city's history — from its founding and the people's militia of Minin and Pozharsky to the Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka and the industrial Soviet period; a dedicated segment was devoted to the 80th anniversary of the Torpedo club. The choir of Lobachevsky University participated in the show. The headline act of the evening was the singer BEARWOLF.[2]
Opening match
In the opening match, Torpedo hosted Kazan's Ak Bars and won 3:2. Fans snapped up tickets for the opening match within minutes of sales going live.[1] The arena drew more than 12,000 spectators.[2][3] Governor Gleb Nikitin described the arena as an element of the cultural and sports cluster at Strelka and noted that its launch was intended to meet fan demand that the previous venue could no longer accommodate. The new arena's capacity is twice that of Torpedo's former home venue, the Nagorny Sports Palace.[1] Torpedo General Director Evgeniy Zabuga pointed out that the opening coincided with the club's anniversary season. In addition to the main ice bowl, the complex features two practice rinks seating 250 each, halls for team sports and gymnastics; one of the auxiliary arenas is fully adapted for sledge hockey.[1][2]
Digital Infrastructure
The ice arena at Strelka became one of the priority facilities for technical specialists at mobile operator T2 as early as 2025. T2 was the first mobile operator to provide the stadium with permanent, stable indoor mobile coverage before its official opening; the network was designed with the venue's capacity in mind and covered not only the ice bowl but also the technical areas.[3]
On the day of the opening match, T2 subscribers collectively used nearly a terabyte of mobile data; mobile internet speeds reached 144 Mbps. Spectators also made active use of voice calls — a combined total of 185 hours of calls were made.[2][3] Alexey Sidorov, T2's Director for the Volga macro-region, called September 14 a doubly significant day — both for Nizhny Novgorod residents and for the operator's technical team. The first major concert at the venue following the opening was a performance by Egor Kreed, scheduled for October 2026.[4][3]
