Dvorets sporta — an indoor sports arena in Nizhny Novgorod. The arena is known as "Nagorny" and is located on Gagarin Avenue; the complex was built in the 1960s and by the 2020s had become technically obsolete. Before relocating to the new Volga Arena, the Nagorny Sports Palace served as the home arena of the Torpedo hockey club.[1] In 2026, an engineering survey of the building began ahead of a planned reconstruction; the results of the survey are intended to form the basis of a cost estimate for the renovation works, with the initiative coming from the Nizhny Novgorod Region Ministry of Sports. Alongside the reconstruction of Nagorny, the Nizhny Novgorod authorities plan to carry out a major modernization of the Konovalenko Sports Palace.[2] The engineering survey was initiated by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Minister of Sports, Dmitry Kabaylo, who stated that experts are inspecting the building's load-bearing structures in order to calculate the cost estimates for the upcoming works.[2] Following the relocation of the Torpedo hockey club, the new ice arena at Strelka — Volga Arena — was constructed from July 2022; its construction required more than 5,000 tonnes of reinforcement steel, approximately 20,000 tonnes of metal structures, and 25,000 tonnes of concrete; the building stands 38 metres tall, is 134 metres wide, and 230 metres long. Volga Arena became the only ice palace in Russia to simultaneously operate three ice rinks, and is capable of hosting Ice Hockey World Championship matches.[1] Nagorny will retain its sports functions: the youth team Chayka will continue to perform there, sports sections will remain in operation, and concerts will be held.
The Torpedo youth hockey section is gradually relocating from Nagorny to new venues; renovation of the palace's premises is scheduled for after this move is complete, and there are no plans to demolish the building or make fundamental changes to its structural elements.[2] Torpedo General Director Evgeniy Zabuga stated that Nagorny would remain the club's reserve arena and that professional hockey should not leave the palace entirely.[3]
