On September 7, 2026, a technical survey of KRK "Nagorny" began in Nizhny Novgorod — the first step toward a future reconstruction of the complex, which was built in the 1960s. The launch of the inspection became known during a press tour for journalists held the same day.[1]

Reasons and goals of the survey

According to Nizhny Novgorod Region Minister of Sport Dmitry Kabaylo, the complex has become outdated both technically and in terms of operation. Specialists are to assess the condition of the building and its load-bearing structures. Based on the findings of the survey, a cost estimate for repairs and reconstruction will be drawn up.[1] Evgeniy Zabuga, General Director of HC Torpedo, confirmed at a separate press conference that the survey was necessary and added that the complex is in any case planned to be kept in working order.[2]

In parallel, the Konovalenko Palace of Sport — the city's second major ice facility — is also being prepared for technical upgrades.[3]

Context: Torpedo's move to Volga Arena

The survey began on the day the new "Volga Arena" opened at the Strelka — a facility under construction since July 2022 that has become HC Torpedo's main home venue. It was precisely the departure of the main team that freed KRK "Nagorny" from its primary load and created the opportunity for its modernization.[1][2]

There are no plans to close "Nagorny" during the preparation for reconstruction. After Torpedo's move, the youth team Chayka will continue to play matches at the complex, the sports school will continue its training sessions, and small concerts are also possible.[1] Zabuga specifically noted that the management is taking into account the negative experience of Omsk, where after the local arena was declared unsafe the team was left without a backup venue and was forced to leave the region: "Nagorny" is intended to be preserved precisely as a reserve arena.[1]
