On August 28, 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a one-day working visit to Nizhny Novgorod. During the visit he toured the Nizhny Novgorod automotive cluster, attended an exhibition of technology companies at the Agency for Strategic Initiatives forum held at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, visited the new Strelka, and held a working meeting with Gleb Nikitin.[3][4]

Nizhny Novgorod Automotive Cluster

At the Nizhny Novgorod automotive cluster, plant employees presented the President with the new-generation Gazel NN vehicle lineup: an ambulance with an innovative medical interior, a school bus, the Valdai 12 fire truck, the Sobol minivan, a design for urban transport, and a hand-controlled Gazel for people with disabilities.[1] Putin inspected the assembly line and got behind the wheel of the Sobol, examining its cargo compartment.[1] The President also test-drove the Volga K50 crossover, driving it to the engine plant.[3]

The engineering center of the GAZ plant presented a modular platform for the next-generation Gazel range — a development realized for the first time in Russian automotive manufacturing.[2] The platform supports diesel, petrol, gas-powered, and hybrid engines, as well as an electric powertrain. Vehicles built on it will feature a monocoque body that is stiffer, lighter, and safer. For the first time in the commercial vehicle segment, a rear independent suspension has been used, giving the rear-wheel-drive vehicle the same loading height as front-wheel-drive equivalents.[2] The modular configuration allows the wheelbase length, roof height, and drive type to be varied, and different body types to be fitted.[2] The GAZ engineering center brings together 32 specialized competence centers covering body, cab, transmission, interior, and chassis.[2] Volga company plans to localize the production of an automatic gearbox and a petrol engine at its Nizhny Novgorod facility by 2028.[2]

The «Strong Ideas for a New Era» Forum

The Agency for Strategic Initiatives forum «Strong Ideas for a New Era» was held at the Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka for the sixth time.[4] At the technology company exhibition, the President was introduced to unmanned vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence, cutting-edge brain-interface devices, developments in the field of radiology, and collaborative robots — machines designed to work alongside humans.[4]

Meeting with the Governor

At the working meeting, Governor Gleb Nikitin briefed the President on the progress of the plan to renew Nizhny Novgorod's tram fleet.[3] The Governor described the day of the visit as an important one for the Nizhny Novgorod automotive industry.[3]
