The Oka Cable Car is a municipal passenger transport facility under construction that is meant to connect the Zarechye (trans-Oka) and Upper Town parts of Nizhny Novgorod. Construction began in August 2025, and service is scheduled to open in 2027. The project is being carried out under a concession agreement with the government of Nizhny Novgorod Region; the concessionaire is JSC "Urbantech Cable Cars".[1]

Route and stations

The 3,340-meter line will run from Zarechny Boulevard to Shveytsariya Park. Three stations are planned along the line: "Zarechnaya" (at Zarechny Boulevard, next to the former Rossiya movie theater)[2], "Tikhaya Gavan" ("Quiet Harbor"), and Gagarin Avenue" (next to the Okeanis shopping and entertainment center of the same name). The architectural concept for all three stations was developed by the Nizhny Novgorod architect Stanislav Gorshunov; the stations will have architectural lighting to create an attractive appearance in the evening.[3] Sixty cabins will operate on the route; the estimated travel time is 15 minutes, which is faster than driving across the Molitovsky Bridge. Each of the 60 cabins is designed for eight passengers and is equipped with heating; the line is planned to operate from 6:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.[4][5]

Design

Fifteen high-strength steel towers will be installed along the route. Roller balancers will be fixed to the tops of the towers, and the track-and-haul rope will be strung over them; the total mass of the steel cable exceeds 80 tonnes. The track-and-haul rope is 54 millimeters in diameter and had already been delivered to the site by the time the first towers were erected.[2][5] The first tower was erected on August 5, 2026, on Zarechny Boulevard, next to the future Zarechnaya station. The second tower was erected on Bauman Street, next to the future Tikhaya Gavan station; the station itself is being built in the area of Bauman, Matrosskaya, and Pravdinskaya streets.[6] It is a tubular structure 18 meters high: its diameter is 1.8 meters at the base and 1 meter at the top; the shape was chosen to suit the surrounding urban development.[1][7]

Before erecting the first tower, the builders relocated utility lines, laid pile foundations, and carried out the preassembly of the metal elements; the lifting was done with heavy equipment. By the beginning of August 2026, piling work had been completed at about 90% on all sites along the route; assembly of the next towers is continuing at the same time. In parallel, a foundation is being built with the help of a tower crane at the site near the Prospekt Gagarina station.[1]

Transport context

According to Sergey Morozov, Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, about 100,000 Nizhny Novgorod residents currently live in the immediate vicinity of the route. By 2033, more than 700,000 square meters of housing are planned to be commissioned within the line's catchment area on both banks of the Oka. The new line is seen as transport provision made in advance for both current residents and the future residents of the neighborhoods now taking shape.[7]

Nizhny Novgorod's first cable car, the line to Bor across the Volga, has been operating since 2012; the line across the Oka will be the city's second.

Funding and timeline

The project's cost is estimated at 5.2 billion rubles. Of this amount, 2.9 billion rubles is a capital grant from Nizhny Novgorod Region, provided from investment budget loan funds.[2] The bulk of the construction work is planned to be completed by the end of 2026, with passenger service starting in 2027.[1]

The line's design capacity is more than 30,000 passengers per day.[6]

Compared with existing routes, a trip on the cable car cuts travel time by about half an hour.[6]

Under his leadership, the GORA Bureau based the project on the idea of open architecture, in which the engineering structures themselves form the visual image of the buildings rather than hiding behind decorative elements. The project was awarded a special prize of the national architectural award "Project Russia" in the category "For the Futuristic and High-Tech Image of a New Urban Transport Link." In addition, the project received three awards from the national independent architectural rating "Golden Capital": a Super Final participant diploma, a special diploma from the organizing committee, and a Hamburg Score diploma, Second Degree; around one thousand architects from different cities across Russia took part in the Hamburg Score voting. A model of the stations was presented at the National Center "Russia" at the exhibition "The Birth of Scale. Architecture of the Future," devoted to promising directions in the development of Russian architecture.[9]
