Dmitry Anatolyevich Kabanov (September 30, 1938, Gorky — 1993) was a radio engineer, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and professor at Gorky Polytechnic Institute; at various points he served as dean of its radio engineering faculty [1][2]. He authored the monograph "Functional Devices with Distributed Parameters" and was one of those who established the Department of Radio Equipment Design's ties with four radio-electronic enterprises in the city [1][3][2].
A Polytech man
He graduated from Gorky Polytechnic Institute named after A. A. Zhdanov in 1960 with a specialization in radio engineering and remained there for the rest of his life [1]. He defended his candidate's dissertation in 1967, received the title of associate professor in 1969, earned his doctoral degree in 1982, and was awarded the rank of full professor in 1983 [1].
His research encompassed high- and ultra-high-frequency radio engineering, pulse technology, methods for analyzing nonlinear electrical circuits, and computer-aided design systems for radio-electronic equipment [1].
The radio engineering faculty of the Polytech — reestablished in 1952 and renamed the Faculty of Radio Electronics and Technical Cybernetics in 1972 — was headed at various times by Yuri Lezin, Dmitry Ageyev, Leonid Ostashkin, Kabanov, and Vasily Baranov; in 2005, the faculty grew into the Institute of Radio Electronics and Information Technologies [2].

The Department and Four Plants
The Department of Design and Manufacturing Technology of Radio Equipment was established at the Polytech in 1956; the first graduating class of radio engineer-designers and technologists completed their studies two years later [3]. From 1978, Kabanov led postgraduate studies there in the specialization "Theoretical Foundations of Radio Engineering" [3].
Over five years, from 1982 to 1987, the department opened branches at four enterprises in Gorky — giving student-designers access to active development work on airborne radio equipment, radio measurement instruments, and control systems [3]. Reference sources credit Kabanov personally with organizing these branches [1].
One of them worked at the scientific research institute of radio communications, which later became NPO Polyot, another at the instrument-engineering institute Kvarts, and two more at the institute of measurement systems and the institute Salyut [3].

Two books
In 1972, the monograph "Problems of Synthesis of Nonlinear Pulse Devices" was published by Sovetskoye Radio, co-authored with Lev Morugin and L. S. Bartenev [3].
Seven years later, the same publisher released his own book — "Functional Devices with Distributed Parameters. Foundations of Theory and Calculation," 335 pages, ten of which are taken up by the bibliography [2]. It brings together the theory and calculation methods for functional microelectronics devices built on distributed and quasi-distributed systems with nonlinear and time-varying parameters, and sets out the principles for constructing mathematical and physical models of such devices [2].
In total, Kabanov left behind two monographs, eleven inventions, and more than one hundred and fifty scholarly works [1].
Students
Thirty people defended their candidate's dissertations under his supervision; three of his students went on to earn doctoral degrees. He chaired a dissertation council and was a member of the Upper Volga branch of the Academy of Technological Sciences [1].
Among those who began their careers at the department under Kabanov were Sergey Nikulin, who headed it from 1992 to 1998, and Vladimir Krylov, who became head of the neighboring Department of Circuit Theory and Telecommunications [3][4].
Kabanov died in 1993; a biographical entry on him was included in the historical appendix of the reference book "Who's Who in Nizhny Novgorod Region" — the section devoted to deceased scholars of the Polytech [1].
