Sergey Mikhaylovich Nikulin (born February 19, 1949, in Gorky) is a radio engineer, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and professor at Nizhny Novgorod Technical University, specializing in measurements at ultra-high frequencies [1]. He has been at the university since 1972, working his way up from postgraduate student to head of the Department of Radio Equipment Design, and today heads its postgraduate program [1][2].
Half a Century at One Institute
He graduated from Gorky Polytechnic Institute in 1971 with a specialization in radio engineering and spent a year working as a junior engineer at the Gorky Design and Technology Bureau for Measuring Instruments — the enterprise that grew into the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Measuring Systems [1].
In 1972, he returned to the polytechnic institute as a postgraduate student and never left: assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, and from 1991 onward, professor [1].
From 1992 to 1998, he headed the Department of Design and Manufacturing Technology of Radio Equipment; in 1997, the department received its current name — "Computer Technologies in Design and Manufacturing" [1][2].

Gorky Komsomol Prize
In 1975, the Gorky Komsomol Prize in Science and Technology was awarded to a group of young faculty researchers — A. A. Popov, Nikulin, Yu. A. Bulin, E. A. Egorov, and Stanislav Morugin — for a series of works in functional microelectronics [2].
That same year of 1975 was a fruitful one for the department: it organized and held the first regional school-seminar on functional microelectronics, and a paper by one of its students at the All-Union competition of student research works was awarded a gold medal [2].
Measurements at Microwave Frequencies
Nikulin's field of work covers the electrodynamics of microwave frequencies, methods and instruments for microwave measurements, computer-aided design of microwave equipment, and digital data processing [1]. To his name stand 73 articles in leading scientific publications, nine USSR inventor's certificates, two Russian patents, and 84 conference papers [1].
In 1996, together with E. B. Abrosimova and S. A. Labutin, he published a study on an amplitude microwave moisture meter based on a multilayer stripline — a device used to investigate non-stationary moisture exchange in sands and various wood species [3].
In 2005, the NSTU publishing house released the textbook "Intelligent Analysis of Microwave Circuits and Antennas," co-authored with A. M. Kudryavtsev, covering methods for automated measurement of wave parameters of circuits and antennas and the recovery of antenna parameters from measurements taken against a background of interfering reflections [3].
The Department Today
The postgraduate program of the Department of "Computer Technologies in Design and Manufacturing" trains specialists in the field of "Instruments and Methods for Environmental, Substance, Material, and Product Monitoring," with Professor Nikulin as its head [2].
Three research directions of the department continue the line he established: intelligent analysis of microwave circuits, devices, and antennas; development of intelligent information systems; and computer-aided design and measurement of microelectronic components [2]. Students undergo specialized training at Nizhny Novgorod enterprises — Polyot, the Yu. Ye. Sedakov Institute of Measurement Systems , Kvarts, and the Radio Engineering Institute [2].
Nikulin is included in the list of distinguished alumni and staff of NSTU [4]. The department where he works was brought into factory-based branches in the 1980s by Dmitry Kabanov [2].
