Nikulin Nikolay Konstantinovich (born February 22, 1939, Gorky) — a Nizhny Novgorod dermatovenereologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and from 1994 director of the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Dermatology and Venereology on Kovalikhinsky Street, as well as head of the Department of Dermatovenereological Diseases at the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy.[1][2][3]
Thirty-two years at the Academy
He graduated from the medical faculty of the Gorky Medical Institute in 1962 and worked for three years at the Institute of Dermatology and Venereology.[1][2]
From 1965 to 1994 he taught at the institute, which had become the Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy, where he headed the Department of Dermatovenereological Diseases. He defended his candidate's dissertation in 1968 at the Central Research Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in Moscow, and his doctoral dissertation there as well in 1989.[1][2]
His principal research areas are the study of the pathogenesis of psoriasis and the improvement of its treatment methods, as well as the organization of dermatovenereological services within the penitentiary system. He is the author of 160 scholarly works and three patents; under his academic supervision one doctoral and five candidate's dissertations have been defended.[1][2]
The Institute on Kovalikhinsky Street
Nikulin became director of the Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in 1994. The institute occupied building 49-g on Kovalikhinsky Street in Nizhegorodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod and by 2012 had eighty years of operation behind it.[3][4][5]
Its structure comprised a research-clinical department and a laboratory-experimental department; the clinic had two hundred beds. Each year more than two thousand residents of the city and the regions under its supervision received inpatient treatment, while more than fifteen thousand patients received consultative and diagnostic assistance; the staff included seven doctors of sciences and twelve candidates of sciences.[4]
The institute's research focused on the treatment of dermatoses through the study of physical, immunological, biochemical, and morphological indicators, as well as the diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.[4]
On October 23, 2012, the institute ceased to exist as an independent legal entity: it was merged with the Moscow-based State Scientific Center for Dermatovenereology and Cosmetology of the Russian Ministry of Health and became its Nizhny Novgorod branch.[3]

Recognition
He is a corresponding member of the Euro-Asian Academy of Medical Sciences and a professional member of the American Psoriasis Association, and has participated in four European and two international medical congresses.[1][2]
He served on the board of the All-Russian Society of Dermatovenereologists and chaired its scientific committee, and was a member of the editorial boards of the journals Vestnik Dermatologii i Venerologii and Klinicheskaya Dermatologiya i Venerologiya.[2]

Nikulin is a follower of the St. Petersburg venereological scientific school; the specialist institute under his direction remained the only dermatovenereological research institution in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[2][4]
The institute warned patients about the unwarranted diagnosis of trichomoniasis, chlamydia, and ureaplasmosis practiced by commercial clinics, and addressed the consequences of irrational therapy.[4]
