The Gorky Polytechnic Institute was a higher technical educational institution that operated in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) during the Soviet period. At various times it bore the name of A. A. Zhdanov. The institute has since been transformed into Polytech — the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University (NSTU).
Faculties and degree programs
The institute included a shipbuilding faculty that trained specialists in naval and submarine engineering. It was at this faculty that Gennadiy Bolonin received his education — he went on to become one of the world's leading experts in the design of submersible vehicles, working at the Central Design Bureau "Lazurit".
Academic staff and research activities
The institute was home to postgraduate students and faculty members who later went on to hold prominent positions in the educational and scientific community of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Among them was Yuri Nikolayevich Petrov — Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation and Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences — who progressed at the institute from postgraduate student to faculty dean, also serving as senior lecturer and associate professor. Among the institute's graduates was Dmitry Leonidovich Zverev (b. 1961), who completed his studies at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute named after A. A. Zhdanov in 1984 and subsequently became a Doctor of Technical Sciences, Director General and Chief Designer of OKBM named after I. I. Afrikantov, as well as an Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Region (from 2021).[1]
