- Alexander Vasilyevich Stupin — artist and educator (1776–1861), who founded in Arzamas in the early 19th century Stupin's Arzamas School of Painting outside St. Petersburg and Moscow. The school played a significant role in art education in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and trained a number of painters who later gained recognition beyond its borders; in particular, Vasily Grigoryevich Perov studied here from 1846 to 1849.
