- Alexander Vasilyevich Stupin — artist and teacher (1776–1861) who founded, in the early 19th century in Arzamas, the first private art school in Russia outside St. Petersburg and Moscow. The school played a significant role in the artistic education of the Nizhny Novgorod area and trained a number of painters who went on to gain recognition beyond it; in particular, Vasily Grigoryevich Perov studied there in 1846–1849. For the 250th anniversary of Stupin's birth, an exhibition, "The Arzamas Academy. For the 250th Anniversary of A. V.
