Nizhny Novgorod University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NNGASU) is a state institution of higher education in Nizhny Novgorod, founded in 1930 and still in operation today. It is located at 65 Ilyinskaya Street. It is one of the oldest architecture and civil engineering universities in Russia and the first civil engineering institute in the Volga Region.[1] Over more than ninety years, it has trained more than 100,000 specialists.[1]
History and Renamings
The university was established on June 23, 1930, by a decree of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR as the Nizhny Novgorod Institute of Civil Engineering (NISI), created by separating the civil engineering faculty of Nizhny Novgorod State University into an independent technical educational institution.[2] The first graduation took place in 1932: 32 graduates received diplomas as civil engineers.[1] From 1932, the institute was known as the Gorky Institute of Civil Engineering (GISI), and from 1938 to 1991 it bore the name of V. P. Chkalov.[2]
In 1991, the institution was renamed the Nizhny Novgorod Order of the Red Banner of Labor Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NASI). In 1993, it received the status of an academy and the name Nizhny Novgorod State Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering (NGASA). In 1997, it was granted university status and received its current name, NNGASU.[2]
Structure and Educational Activities
The university has 3 institutes and 4 faculties and 35 departments, and offers 23 fields of study.[3] Across 39 departments, more than 500 faculty members work at the university, including 55 professors and doctors of sciences, more than 250 associate professors and candidates of sciences, and 60 members of Russian state, professional, and international academies.[2]
NNGASU provides training in construction, engineering, information technology, natural sciences, architecture, and creative fields: architects, designers, civil and hydraulic engineers, surveyors, environmental engineers, fire safety specialists, programmers, cultural studies specialists, and others.[3] About 4,760 students are enrolled in full-time study, including 150 international students.[3] The university has developed 21 research and teaching schools. Since 2017, the Department of the History of Architecture and Fundamentals of Architectural Design at NNGASU, together with the Upper Town Deanery of Nizhny Novgorod, has held a student competition called "Churches of the 21st Century": students complete academic projects for chapel-churches on specific building sites in Nizhny Novgorod's residential neighborhoods.[4][1]
Admission to creative programs ("Architecture," "Architectural Environment Design," "Design," "Monumental and Decorative Art") requires internal entrance examinations in drawing, painting, composition, and technical drafting.[1] The average passing score for state-funded places is 211.3; for a number of programs ("Architecture," "Monumental and Decorative Art") it exceeds 390 points.[1] The total number of state-funded places in the current academic year is 987, of which 746 are for bachelor's programs and 81 for specialist programs.[1]
