MATE Club, Mate-Club (Nizhny Novgorod branch) — the first Nizhny Novgorod club of professional mate drinking, a shop of related goods and a creative venue. It spreads the culture of drinking mate — the special tea of the Maya priests, widespread in Argentina. Recommended for further expansion into the regions by Prime Minister Putin as a model of socially oriented business. The project was allocated premises from the governor's non-residential property fund in order to set it up as a principal unit for work with young people.

Maybe this is of no interest to anyone, but I believe everyone should know, so that no unnecessary questions are asked later.

WHY does the MATE Club need Nizhny Novgorod? And why did such a Club, with a fairly narrow audience, decide to open a branch in Nizhny Novgorod?

A little about the past...

At the dawn of the "riot" of large-scale Anti-Drug Campaigns, sponsored by our government and by a mass of other people who believed that this could change the catastrophe bearing down on our world...

The huge number of drug-dependent young people caused a sea of trouble for our "almost democratic" authorities in various regions. But given that they did almost nothing and sought no alternative ways of changing the situation in the country, the growth in the number of lost people kept increasing as degradation in society advanced, along with the natural decline of the economy against a background of constant inflation. Who tried to change what in this country back then is not for us to judge now... We simply did our job — methodically and systematically instilling a TASTE for a healthy way of life, filling the gaps of the educational process in the minds of the rising generation of young people.

We ran around the schools, pushed our way into the universities, made contact with State bodies to which state funds had been allocated for drug-abuse prevention. Yet those funds were not being spent, and we were told we were "wasting our time on nonsense".

We have our own approach to the problem — "with a twist and with beauty". Fear at the scale of the "PLAGUE" increased our persistence. There was nothing left but to choose the path of making MATE a FASHION... We coined slogans: "MATE is cool", "Mate is fashionable", "Being healthy is fashionable"... and a lot of other odds and ends... And at last we were "noticed" FROM ABOVE: "They seem to be making rather a lot of noise..."

Small and quite inconspicuous mate specialists — matero — flew off on the President's money together with musicians and a handful of psychologists to Norilsk (by the figures of 2003 the most criminal city — one in three people aged between 16 and 25 uses drugs).

The All-Russian Anti-Drug Campaign "Train to the Future" went ahead with fireworks and an alcoholic mega-party... As always, in the Russian way... What we had come for was forgotten... But the "Mate" club neither danced nor amused itself; it methodically rang round the fitness centres to arrange presentations. It worked — we got in, we aroused interest, but at the pharmacies we were "sent packing", and to the narcological clinics we were not admitted at all...

All the same, sitting on the plane, there was satisfaction that in such a godforsaken place like-minded people had been found.

BUT THE JOURNEY WAS NOT OVER...

The sponsor of the flight, the airline "Sibir", lands the plane in NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Where the plane is forced to stand for 12 hours refuelling, so as to fly on to Moscow with musicians by now out of their minds, drunken psychologists and sponsors standing on their heads!!!

Sad, but beautiful (golden autumn — warm).

The inquisitive mind of our matero asked the pilot for permission to get down from the plane, and was immediately refused... But the leaders of the anti-drug campaign did not fully understand that they had got mixed up with INDIANS, and that tying them down would not work... A small team of 3 people quietly went to the tail of the plane, having first drunk up the remaining mate (they always had some with them). Strapping on their extremely heavy rucksacks, the matero fearlessly began to climb down the rope ladder from the plane, without informing anyone about it. Once the ground was felt underfoot, spirits rose... The shouts of the frantic pilot lent charm to the march along the runway of Nizhny Novgorod; as it turned out, the runway ran alongside a forest, and the little detachment plunged into the thicket with its golden leaves and, rustling merrily, set off for the road...

Catching a taxi, they came to the Moskovsky railway station. They found out how many kilometres it was to Moscow. They put their suitcases in the left-luggage office and drank mate in a café (they had some with them, as always). People stared with all their eyes as gourds appeared on the tables of the respectable café "Moskva", into which was poured either tea or some other sort of herb... The public was in shock... Delicious and comfortable... In Norilsk there was already snow lying and minus 5... The sad memories were erased under the gentle sun of Nizhny Novgorod.

We went off to explore the city. Impressive. The broad Volga, the Kremlin on the hill — the breadth of it, in the Russian way it takes your breath away. We checked: nobody knows about MATE... We got acquainted with young people, gave them a drink from our calabashes, sitting right there on the benches on Pokrovka (it is a sort of Moscow Arbat). We came to the Kremlin, walked along the embankment — we were blissed out and got hungry... Discovering an Old Russian café in the Kremlin wall, we wandered in and, having eaten our fill of the local shchi, we dreamed as we watched the setting red sun — you can guess about what...

An adventure. But today we know that this is destiny, karma, call it what you like...

Last year began on 25 July 2009, with the Day Out of Time. It opened with the first tone of the Red Celestial Wanderer — 100% as it had been 9 years before. On that day at Seliger the staff of the Mate Club managed to meet Putin. After the MATE Club had a lively conversation with the Prime Minister outside the official programme, the Club was "doomed" — in the good sense of the word, of course. Wishing the MATE Club creative success, Vladimir Vladimirovich recommended moving into the regions, commenting that a social project is needed in more remote regions too. But since a great many young people from Nizhny Novgorod were turning up at the MATE Club's venue, it was clear where we needed to go.

Having arrived in Moscow from Seliger, strangely enough people from Nizhny Novgorod simply "poured" into the Club... Every day, without a break, purchases were made through the online shop, and lively and funny people came, with the distinctive character of merchant Nizhny Novgorod.

Signs... Destiny... There is no getting away from it.

The last straw was a funny discovery — we remembered that we HAD BEEN there...

The General Director of the Mate Club picked up the receiver and telephoned the reception office of Valery Shantsev. An appointment was granted at once. It could not have been otherwise, since V. P. Shantsev is the Sixth Tone, the Double Blue Healing Hand. It is all simple and clear — the planet needs healing, and it does not matter by what methods; young people in the country must be protected. Valery Shantsev recommended opening three MATE Clubs in Nizhny Novgorod, given the positive experience of Moscow, but understanding that there were not so many resources, the Director agreed to one, realistically assessing the volume of work.

Experienced mateiro masters in beautiful Indian dress will conduct at Your home the mate-drinking ritual (Argentine or Brazilian) of Your choice. You will learn from our specialists many interesting things about the traditions of the ancient Indians and about the mate drink, listen to amazing tales and legends and enjoy the aroma and taste of the beverage.

Children's parties

Besides corporate parties for respectable business people, our club holds children's parties especially for young Indians.

Script plan for a children's party: (on the Club's premises)

1. INITIATION (20 min.) Initiation into the Indians, face paint is applied and a headband is issued.

2. THE CEREMONY OF MAGIC BREWS (40 min.) A brew of magic herbs is boiled over a live fire, a talk about the herbs and the methods of gathering them, legends and tales. A treat of nuts, candied fruit and a Mexican mix (legumes) is served.

3. ARCHERY (45 min.) The experienced master "Eagle Eye" will teach the basic principles of archery and everyone will be given the chance to test their marksmanship; the winner receives a prize. At the same time the game "Indian rain" is played in the grotto.

4. THE INDIAN GAME "RED EAGLE" (45 min.) Number of players: 10-20 people. Equipment: an eagle mask Course of the game. The Red Eagle is chosen by a counting rhyme; the eagle's nest is in the grotto. The Red Eagle sits in the grotto while the other players walk back and forth about the main hall. Suddenly the cry of the Red Eagle, foretelling the hunt, comes from the grotto. He flies out of the grotto and tries to touch one of the players. If the eagle has touched somebody, the two of them join hands and go into the grotto. After all the players have been caught, an eagle is chosen again. Rules. 1. You may not break free if you are caught. 2. You may not run out of the grotto. The caught players play an Indian game of marksmanship.

5. THE ANACONDA DANCE (20 min.) The participants join hands and dance to Indian music, slowly approaching the exit.

COMMENTS: 1. The Club's staff are in national dress. 2. The face paint comes off easily, the headbands are taken back by the Club.

Off-site events

Option 1. An outing into nature. You are served by senior mateiro masters.

All the ceremonies are a cultural performance saturated with beautiful information in the form of legends and myths. All the staff are dressed in custom-designed costumes – authenticity is observed to the maximum.

Option 2. All the events are held on the premises of the most original CLUB itself. The club is closed for special service. Catering is ordered from a restaurant.

The main aim of the camp: acquaintance with the life, rites, rituals and traditions of the Indians - and all of it in the bosom of nature!

Means: living in the forest, the styling of national dress, the holding of rituals, the telling of tales and legends, the drinking of the ancient Indian beverages - mate and cocoa.

What mate is

The tree-like shrub Yеrda Mate grows in the wild and reaches 10 metres in height. From the 1930s mate began to be actively cultivated. The Maya Indians gathered mate branches in the forest, whereas now branches are grafted from the best selected shoots.

Production technology

  • 1. The shoots are cut back until the tree is practically "bare", its height not exceeding 4 metres, so that the shoots gain more strength. The branches are cut in the period from March to October. A twig must not exceed 2-3 mm in diameter.
  • 2. By hand they are put into canvas sacks and taken away for processing.
  • 3. On special machines, with a strong blast of air, the branches are separated from the leaves.
  • 4. They are finely chopped, may be washed (depending on the individual technology of the factory) and smoked. The raw material loses 20-25 % of its weight.
  • 5. After smoking, the raw material is dried again. The most beneficial substance, mateine, can be preserved only if the processing takes no longer than 18-24 hours. The moisture content of the final raw material must not exceed 5 %- this affects the quality of the mate.
  • 6. In olden times open kilns were used for smoking, the smoke from which was directed onto the mate. They were fired with barbacua wood, and the mate acquired the delicate smell of fragrant forest smoke. Today this is done in a more technological way, and even drying makes it possible to preserve the raw material more evenly and with better quality.
  • 7. After drying, the mate is packed into linen sacks and sewn up. They are placed in storehouses and kept from 8 months to 1 year, left to "ripen".
  • 8. Depending on the quality of processing and storage, the degrees of packaging differ as well. The best raw material is packed into bags under pressure, preserving the set regime of moisture and density. The presence of dust is obligatory.

Types of mate

  • Green — its colour is exclusively dark green, it looks like finely cut freshly mown grass, it is dried by natural means without any additional treatment. Natural drying preserves the colour of the leaves, but there is a probability that the most valuable substance, mateine, will quickly turn into caffeine.
  • Roasted — the same green one, but roasted by a particular technology in kilns... It has a brown colour and resembles roasted coffee. It contains more caffeine than the other varieties.
  • Golden — it has a golden light-pistachio colour. Finely ground raw material and the absence of a large quantity of twigs and sticks already speak of its high processing technology. The presence of thin stalks is permissible. The presence of dust and the airiness of the raw material are obligatory. Fresh Yerba Mate branches tied into small brooms are stacked and smoked over fires or in clay kilns fired with a special wood. Golden Mate is called "the green gold of Argentina"; it is the main branch of the country's modern industry.

A love of the siesta

Everyone in Argentina likes to rest after lunch, though in the capital the siesta has long fallen out of practice. In provincial towns, however, the traditions are honoured. Some 150 km from Buenos Aires there is a remarkable town called Tandil. Here the siesta lasts from 13.00 to 17.00. If a passer-by appears in the street during that stretch of time, one may safely assert that he is not one of theirs. On the other hand, people in Tandil live to be 100.

The sacred rule is the siesta (lunch that turns into an afternoon rest) from 13:00 to 16:00. During this time (the hottest), when all the shops, stalls and banks close, it is not even customary to arrange meetings or call one another. During the siesta, as they say in Rome, "only dogs and Frenchmen are out walking".

There is such a phenomenon as the Spanish siesta. It begins at one in the afternoon and continues until five in the evening. During this time all the shops close, office workers go home for lunch and an afternoon nap. Then, after five, comes the time for the afternoon snack, obligatory for all children. And for those who have this time free, the snack is an occasion to meet.

The Great Tea Road. Motor rally. 03 July 2012.

Participants in the APEC 2012 transcontinental car rally along the "Great Tea Road" route visited Nizhny Novgorod on 3 July. Among them were foreign representatives from every APEC country, cultural figures, well-known politicians and businessmen. The journey across the whole country, from St Petersburg to Vladivostok, was timed to coincide with the upcoming forum of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). The aim of the coming summit is to develop domestic inbound tourism between the APEC member countries, as well as to strengthen relations between the states of the Pacific basin, to build economic cooperation, to create an opportunity to attract interest in the "Great Tea Road", to promote a healthy lifestyle and to encourage Russians to explore the country's cultural heritage.

In addition, the main goals include strengthening the role of the tourism business in reviving the traditions of merchantry and patronage of the arts, as well as bringing to the market those small towns of the country that historically formed part of the "Tea Road". It was no accident that Nizhny Novgorod fell on the motorcade's route: it was here that merchants brought tons of tea to the fair every year. The rally participants were welcomed in the best traditions of a merchant city. A team of Nizhny Novgorod bikers escorted the crew to the Mate club, where a press conference was held, after which the participants and guests were introduced to the tea-drinking traditions of different countries of the world.

The guests tasted the drink of the Indians — mate, Indian masala and even Buryat tea with milk, butter and salt. "Proper tea drinking happens when you are already late everywhere, when nobody is in a hurry, but we still have thousands of kilometres ahead," said Ildar Mamatov, director of the "Great Tea Road" tourism project. But the rally participants manage to combine business with pleasure. As Ernest Kim, the organiser of the rally, put it: "At the end of the road we will bring Russian tea to China and drink it from a samovar." Besides the unusual tea ceremonies, a tour of the merchant city awaited the rally participants.

Ernest Kim said that the campaign has several objectives, but one of the main ones is gathering information about various Russian cities. The crew included a film team from Beijing and Shanghai television. "Tourists from China are a very great potential. Russia has a great many beautiful places, but they are not made visible, and foreigners are not sure whether to come here," Kim explained. After a busy programme it was time to get ready for the road. The guests were given invigorating mate, for the road ahead is long, and set off for another, no less beautiful city — Kazan.
