"Krasny Sormovich" is a Nizhny Novgorod district newspaper founded on November 7, 1927, as one of the first factory multi-circulation newspapers in Soviet Russia.[1] It is among the oldest regional publications in the country. The newspaper's founders are PJSC "Krasnoye Sormovo Plant," the administration of Nizhny Novgorod, and the administration of Sormovo District.[1] The editorial office is located at 1 Barrikad St.[3]

History

The history of the workers' press in Sormovo goes back to 1900, when local worker correspondents wrote texts for leaflets and articles, learning the newspaper trade under the guidance of Maxim Gorky and Platon Lebedev-Kerzhentsev at the Nizhny Novgorod publications "Volgar" and "Nizhegorodsky Listok."[2] In 1924, the district committee of the RCP(b), the "Metallist" trade union, and V. I. Kuritsyn, director of the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant, decided to launch a Sormovo newspaper. From April 1924 it appeared twice a month under the title "Krasnoye Sormovo."[2]

The first issue of the regular "biweekly newspaper of the workers and employees of the plant" under the name "Krasny Sormovich" came out on November 7, 1927, and was dedicated to the tenth anniversary of Soviet power; the same issue reported the start of construction of the Sormovo Palace of Culture.[2] From 1934 the newspaper came out daily except Sunday, with a print run of 7,000 copies. During the years of perestroika, its frequency dropped to three times a week, at four pages.[2] Publication was not interrupted even during the Great Patriotic War: the issue of June 23, 1941, carried the report of Germany's attack, and the issue of April 14, 1961, carried news of Gagarin's flight.[2]

In early 2016, the newspaper found itself on the verge of bankruptcy due to a lack of funding. At the January session of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma, the question of allocating 1.2 million rubles from the city budget was raised. The leader of the Communist Party (KPRF) faction, Nikolay Sataev, spoke in defense of the publication, pointing out that the city had already lost "Kanavinskoye Slovo" and should not repeat that scenario in Sormovsky District. The deputies approved the funding and expressed hope for support from enterprises in Sormovsky and Moskovsky Districts.[5]

Current status

The newspaper is published weekly with a print run of 3,100 copies in a 12-page format.[1] It serves the population of Sormovsky and Moskovsky Districts, which have more than 300,000 residents.[5] The total print run over the whole period of its existence has exceeded 102 million copies.[2] The regular column "Zavodskaya prokhodnaya" ("The Factory Gatehouse") is devoted to the life of Sormovo shipbuilders; the "Lira" ("Lyre") column publishes works by poets of the Sormovo literary association "Volga" every month.[1]

Awards

The newspaper has been awarded a Certificate of Honor of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and a certificate of the Union of Journalists of Russia, became a laureate of the fifth All-Russian Media Festival "All Russia — 2000," and was a finalist for the Nizhny Novgorod Prize.[1]
