Alexei Mikhailovich Makievsky (1934–2019) was a Soviet and Russian statesman, head of the executive authorities of Gorky and Nizhny Novgorod Oblasts. He held key posts in regional administration from the 1970s to the early 1990s; in 2003 he was awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod Region".[2]
Biography
He was born in 1934 in Dnepropetrovsk. In 1950 he graduated from the Gorky Aviation Technical College and was sent to work as a design engineer at the Gorky Aviation Plant named after S. Ordzhonikidze. In 1954 he was elected secretary of the plant's Komsomol committee.[2]
From 1957 he was second secretary, and from 1958 first secretary, of the Gorky City Komsomol Committee. From 1961 to 1966 he was first secretary of the Gorky Regional Komsomol Committee. In 1966 he was elected first secretary of the Leninsky District CPSU Committee of the city of Gorky, and in 1970–1975 was second secretary of the Gorky City CPSU Committee.[3]
From 1975 to 1990 he worked as deputy and then first deputy chairman of the executive committee of the Gorky Regional Council of People's Deputies. From April 1990 to February 1992 he was deputy, then first deputy chairman, and acting chairman of the executive committee of the Regional Council of People's Deputies of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. From 1992 he was retired.[2] From 2004 he was a member of the Council of Veterans of the Nizhny Novgorod Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs).[3]
Work as head of the executive committee
During his years of work in the regional executive committee, under Makievsky's leadership or with his direct participation, the region carried out the Nizhny Novgorod Hydroelectric Power Plant, the Kstovo Oil Refinery, bridges across the Volga and the Oka, the Palace of Sports, and a number of cinemas; the reconstruction of light-industry enterprises was carried out, along with the construction of treatment facilities, the commissioning of the Nizhny Novgorod Metro, and the gasification of settlements in the region.[1] Yevgeny Lyulin, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, described him as a man in whose charge lay all matters of the economy — from road construction to support for agriculture.[2]
Memory
Alexei Mikhailovich Makievsky died on 18 March 2019.[3] On 25 May 2022, a ceremony was held on the Upper Volga Embankment in Nizhny Novgorod to unveil a memorial plaque in his honor. The event was attended by Yevgeny Lyulin, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and Deputy Governor Andrei Gneushev.[3] The memorial plaque was placed on the building on Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment where Makievsky had lived.[1]
