History

The first mention of Voskresenskoye dates to 1614. At that time the village of Voskresenskoye also retained another name — Ilyinskoye. At this time it belonged to the Lapshanga volost of Galich Uyezd. The Lapshanga volost occupied the space of the middle Povetluzhye from the Varvazh River in the north to the mouth of the Usta River. Today part of Voskresensky, Varnavinsky and Krasnobakovsky districts occupy this territory. It was the center of the "Ilyinskoye newly-settled hamlets." The settlers had been brought from the territory of the present-day Vetluzhsky District, from the "Voskresenskoye black settlement," when this territory, by the tsar's grant, became the property of Prince Mstislavsky. The village was given a new name — Ilyinskoye, but the settlers themselves kept their old name as well — Voskresenskoye. The village had two names: Ilyinskoye — Voskresenskoye. The latter, the more native and dear to the settlers, remained in use and became officially recognized.

In 1646 the lands of the The Vetluga River-The Lyunda River interfluve, including the village of Voskresenskoye, were transferred for almost two subsequent centuries into the possession of Nikifor Sobakin, an okolnichy of the tsar's court, and afterward to the heirs of a powerful boyar family.

In the second half of the 19th century the village of Voskresenskoye was already a major trading center of Povetluzhye with its own fair.

But, as before, "the forest is the sole provider and nourisher of the local peasant," as the writer A. Potekhin aptly noted. Among the well-known timber merchants of that time were the Voskresenskoye-based merchants Belyayev, Shagin, Zelenov, Vilkov and Shurtygin.

In 1961 Voskresenskoye received the status of a rural-type settlement.
