The series of drone attacks on Nizhny Novgorod Region in August 2026 refers to the combined strikes by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) against the region's territory throughout August 2026. The month's chronicle records several episodes: a series of nightly strikes from August 2 through 7, including the attack on Nizhny Novgorod on August 4, the strike on August 12, and the largest attack, which took place during the night of August 18–19. That final episode was the largest in terms of the number of drones intercepted.
The strikes in early August came on several consecutive nights from August 2 through 7; each episode was accompanied by the introduction of the regional "Drone Hazard" alert regime and its subsequent cancellation. The attacks were part of broader strikes against Russian regions during that period.
Early August
During the night of August 2–3, the "Drone Hazard" regime was introduced over Nizhny Novgorod Region and was lifted by the regional Emergency Response System (RSCS) by the morning of August 2. Residents were warned not to approach any UAV debris they might find and to report it by calling 112.[1]
On the night of August 3, the regime was reintroduced and again cancelled by the morning of August 3. Between 20:00 on August 3 and 08:00 on August 4, Russian air defense systems collectively intercepted and destroyed 320 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones over Russian territory, including over Nizhny Novgorod Region; in addition, strikes during that period were repelled over the Moscow Region, the Republic of Crimea, and Belgorod, Bryansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Leningrad, Lipetsk, Novgorod, Oryol, Pskov, Ryazan, Rostov, Smolensk, Tver, and Tula Regions, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.[2][3] During the following period — from 08:00 to 20:00 on August 4, Moscow time — air defense forces destroyed a further 304 Ukrainian UAVs over Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, and Tula Regions, as well as over the Moscow Region and the Black Sea; Nizhny Novgorod Region was not mentioned separately in the Ministry of Defense summary for that interval.[4]
The August 4 attack
The attack on Nizhny Novgorod took place during the night and early morning hours of August 4. Nizhny Novgorod Mayor Yuri Shalabayev reported this in his channel on the MAX messenger: he stated that no city residents were injured and that only partial damage to several vehicles had been recorded, with specialists working at the sites. Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin clarified that over the course of that same night, 26 drones had been shot down over the region as a whole, with no casualties.[5]
The details of this episode are described in the separate article "Attack on Nizhny Novgorod, August 4, 2026."
Attacks of August 5–7
In the early hours of August 6, drones again attacked the Nizhny Novgorod Region. One UAV, suppressed by electronic warfare systems, crashed into a tree in the selo of Savasleyka in the Kulebaki urban district; the scattered debris caused a fire in an apartment of a residential building. Three adults and a child were injured, and all received medical assistance. The fire was extinguished and no other damage was reported — as announced by Governor Gleb Nikitin.[6]
The "Drone Hazard" alert regime was also declared on August 5 and 6; moreover, as of August 7, departures of four flights at Nizhny Novgorod airport were delayed; during the attacks, the airport also switched to a restricted operating mode under which flights were conducted by coordination.[1][7][5]
Attack of August 12
Another strike on Nizhny Novgorod was recorded on August 12, 2026. For details, see the article "UAV Attack on Nizhny Novgorod on August 12, 2026."
Attack during the night of August 18–19
The most large-scale episode in the series occurred during the night of August 18–19, 2026. Forces of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense, Rosgvardiya units, and fighters of the volunteer detachment "Bars NN" intercepted and destroyed 52 drones.[8][9][10] According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties among the region's residents.[8]
Two private houses, outbuildings, and several vehicles were damaged by falling debris; windows were blown out in one apartment building.[10] Emergency services worked at the debris fall sites to assess the scale of damage. Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin stated that assistance would be provided to all those affected.[9]
Shortly before this attack, on 18 August, a resident of Kstovsky District was fined for posting online a video recording indicating the location where a UAV had come down[8]. A detailed account of the night-time strike is given in the dedicated article "Drone attack on Nizhny Novgorod Region, 19 August 2026".
Attacks in other regions, 18–19 August
During the same period, UAV strikes were recorded across the country. On 18 August, air-defence forces destroyed 65 fixed-wing drones over twelve hours across a number of regions — Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, and Tula Regions, Krasnodar Krai, Adygea, Crimea, and the waters of the Black Sea.[11] In the early hours of 19 August, two attacks on Sevastopol were also repelled: 13 drones were destroyed, and grass fires were recorded in the Balaklava District.[12]
Response of the authorities
The Prosecutor's Office of Nizhny Novgorod Region took oversight of the observance of the rights of citizens affected by the 6 August attack. Complaints and requests for legal assistance were accepted via a hotline at +7-903-602-22-20.[6] City authorities also urged residents who discovered debris not to approach it and to call 112 immediately. Sources note that shortly before the events described, an autonomous non-profit organisation specialising in protection against UAV attacks had been established in the region.[3]
Context
The attacks of early August 2026 were a continuation of strikes against Nizhny Novgorod Region that had been recorded previously. As a result of the attack of 2 July 2026 in Kstovo, one person was killed, four were wounded, and a multi-storey residential building was damaged. In the attack of 24 June 2026, two people were killed. The regional authorities undertook to assist residents of the Kstovo apartment block with repairs.[6]
