The drone attack on Nizhny Novgorod on August 12, 2026, was an episode of the Russo-Ukrainian armed conflict that took place on the morning of August 12, 2026. Several unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down over the city and the region; one of them fell in the courtyard of a residential complex in Nizhny Novgorod. No casualties or serious damage were recorded.

Course of events

On the morning of August 12, a drone hazard alert was re-introduced in Nizhny Novgorod Region — according to the outlet "Zhivyom v Nizhnem" ("We Live in Nizhny"), it was declared at 8:45.[1] Residents of Kstovo, Dzerzhinsk, and the Kulebakskiy District reported explosions; the administrations of five districts published shelter addresses. On August 12, 2026, sirens warning residents to take cover were heard in Nizhny Novgorod Region for the first time since the series of attacks began — their sound was audible on the streets of Dzerzhinsk.[5][1] Chkalov Airport imposed restrictions on incoming and outgoing flights for the third consecutive day.[2]

Several drones were shot down during the repulsion of the raid. One of them fell in the courtyard of a residential complex in Nizhny Novgorod; the drone was promptly neutralized — no detonation occurred. Residents of the building then began returning to their apartments.[3][3] According to a statement by city Mayor Yuriy Shalabaev, specialists were working at all drone crash sites; no reports of casualties or damage had been received at the time of the operational updates.[3] Shalabaev urged residents to remain calm and to call 112 in any emergency situation.[3]

Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor Gleb Nikitin announced that a total of 11 drones were shot down over the region during the morning and afternoon of August 12 in the course of the attack. The raid was repelled by air defence forces, electronic warfare units, and fighters of the "Bars-NN" detachment.[2] Nikitin described the situation as being under control and emphasized that protection of the region's airspace was continuing.[2] By midday, restrictions at Chkalov Airport had been lifted, though approximately 15 flights had been delayed by that point.[2]

Context

The August 12 attack was part of a series of strikes on Nizhny Novgorod Region in early August 2026. During the night of August 3–4, drone fragments damaged several vehicles in the city.[2] During the night of August 6, UAV fragments fell on an apartment building in Kulebakskiy District, starting a fire and injuring four people.[2] In early July, falling debris caused the death of one person and damaged a building: the 44 families living there received approximately 2.8 million rubles for glazing repairs.[2] According to the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" news agency, following the August 6 attack, financial assistance was also made available to Nizhny Novgorod residents; residents of the damaged building in Kstovo received 2.7 million rubles.[3]
