Sergachsky Uyezd was an administrative-territorial unit within the Nizhny Novgorod Vicegerency, and later the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, existing from 1779 until the October Revolution.
History
The uyezd was formed in 1779 during the nationwide provincial reform as one of the territorial units of the Nizhny Novgorod Vicegerency. Its territory included lands that had previously belonged to other administrative formations. In 1796, under Paul I, the vicegerency was abolished and transformed into the Nizhny Novgorod Governorate; Sergachsky Uyezd became part of it alongside Arzamassky, Ardatovsky, Balakhninsky, Vasilsky, Gorbatovsky, Nizhegorodsky, Makaryevsky County, Lukoyanovsky Uyezd), Knyagininsky and other uyezds. This administrative division remained unchanged until the October Revolution.
Present Day
The territory of the former Sergachsky Uyezd largely corresponds to the modern Sergach District of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, with its administrative center in the Sergach (disambiguation).
