Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd was an administrative-territorial unit within Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, existing from the 17th to the 20th century with its center in Nizhny Novgorod. It was one of twelve uyezds of the governorate, alongside Ardatovsky, Balakhninsky, Vasilsky, Gorbatovsky, Knyagininsky, Makaryevsky County, Lukoyanovsky, Sergachsky, Semyonovsky, and others.

Landownership in the uyezd

In 1720 the industrialist Nikita Demidov bought from Nikolai Fyodorovich Golovin an estate in Barminskaya Volost of Nizhny Novgorod Uyezd, which gave him grounds to obtain noble rank. The acquired holdings included Bykovka, Fokino, Ognyov-Maidan, and Pokrovsky Maidan along with the surrounding villages. The Nizhny Novgorod lands served as a source of labor for the Demidov family's Ural factories and passed by inheritance from Nikita to his son Akinfy, then to his grandson Prokopy.
