In September 2026, it became known that the Russkoye Pole agro-holding had taken on the preservation of the Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya breed of cattle — an ancient Nizhny Novgorod breed, of which only 83 animals remained in the region, all at a single farm. The Breed
The Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya breed was developed in the early nineteenth century in Nizhny Novgorod Province by crossing local Oka-region cattle with Tyrolean stock. The Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya is the only breed of cattle native to Nizhny Novgorod; its homeland is the former Gorbatov Uyezd, which corresponds to the present-day Bogorodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Region.[3] It was officially recognized as a distinct breed in 1926, when a state herd book was also established. In the late twentieth century, Angler and Red Danish bulls were used in the breeding program. [4]
The breed is hardy, disease-resistant, and well adapted to the local climate. In particular, it shows resistance to leukosis, brucellosis, and tuberculosis.[3] Its milk has high fat and protein content: average yield is 5,342 kilograms with a fat content of 4.22 percent and a protein content of 3.40 percent. In 1993, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations classified the breed's population as critical. Numbers of Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya cattle continued to decline as higher-yielding breeds became more widespread.[3] [4]
What Remains
In Nizhny Novgorod Region, Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya cattle have survived at a single farm — the Gorbatovskoe joint-stock company. It holds 83 animals, including calves. [1] [2]
Conservation Efforts
The farm has completed the collection of samples for genetic analysis, and molecular genetic studies have been carried out; these confirm the purebred status of the animals and reveal the genealogical structure of part of the herd. The next step is a breeding plan for the breed. [1]
By the end of 2026, the holding expects to prepare a report on its selective breeding work and submit documentation to Russia's Ministry of Agriculture to obtain gene pool farm status for Gorbatovskoe. Such status recognizes the significance of the breed and opens access to state support. [1] [2]
Progress on the effort was discussed with the participation of Deputy Governor Yegor Polyakov, specialists from the regional ministry of agriculture, and federal scientists. [1]
The Nizhny Novgorod Region budget for 2026 allocated more than 147 million rubles for the support of pedigree livestock farming overall.[5]
As of 2026, Nizhny Novgorod Region had 34 pedigree farms in operation, four of which held gene pool farm status.[5]
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Resources of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Nikolay Denisov, described the Krasnaya Gorbatovskaya breed as part of the region's agricultural heritage and linked the conservation work to strengthening the region's food security.[5]
