The reopening of traffic on the Georgiyevsky Descent after repairs was an event on 10 August 2026 in Nizhny Novgorod, when Shalabayev Yuri announced the full resumption of traffic on one of the key descents connecting the upper part of the city with the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment. The descent was included in the 2026 road repair campaign carried out under the "Infrastructure for Life" national project.[1][3]

Scope and composition of the works

Repairs were carried out along the entire length of the Georgievsky Descent — on a stretch more than 800 meters long from Minin Square to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment.[2][3] As part of the works, specialists replaced the worn roadway surface, installed curb stones, renewed manhole covers and applied new road markings.[1][2] The contractor was OOO Eidos. According to public procurement data, the contract amounted to about 24.5 million rubles;[3] according to City Hall, 27.4 million rubles were allocated for repairing the descent.[4]

Remarks and status of the site at the time of opening

At the time traffic reopened, the site had not been formally handed over by the contractor: the inspection identified a number of remarks that workers still had to address; the list of deficiencies was not officially disclosed.[4] Mayor Yury Shalabayev stressed that when repairing city roads, quality is the priority, not appearance.[1]

Context of the 2026 road campaign

In 2026, under the "Infrastructure for Life" national project, eight road sections were planned for repair in Nizhny Novgorod. Besides the Georgiyevsky Descent, the list included Zvezdinka Street, Kuzbasskaya Street, Udmurtskaya Street, Novikova-Priboya Street, Karl Marx Street, the Myza Bridge overpass, as well as Kazanskoye Highway) and Ryabtseva Street.[3][4] The city administration noted that the work on the Georgiyevsky Descent was completed in the shortest possible time.[1]
