The Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Puppet Theatre is one of Nizhny Novgorod's theatres, founded in 1929.[1] It is located in a complex with the children's Orlyonok cinema at Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, building 39b. The theatre is one of only two puppet theatres in Russia to have been awarded academic status: the title was conferred on 24 September 1997.[2] Over the years of its existence, the theatre has staged more than 300 productions.[2]
Company and craftsmen
The theatre's company and support staff have included specialists in rare theatrical professions. Among them, Semikov Stanislav Aleksandrovich (born 19 September 1947), a wood-carving artist and puppet designer, devoted a significant part of his professional career to the theatre.
Artistic leadership
The position of the theatre's artistic director played a role in Nizhny Novgorod public life: in 2010, the theatre's artistic director appeared on the regional list of the Russian Pensioners' Party and was considered a potential successor to deputy Anton Averin in the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma, in the event that Averin were to relinquish his deputy mandate early due to an appointment as deputy head of the region.[2]

By 2026, a major renovation of the theater building is nearing completion, funded under the federal project "Family Values and Cultural Infrastructure" of the national project "Family".[3]
