NewNN, the "New Nizhny" Portal, New-NNRU (NewNN.RU) — the first Nizhny Novgorod multi-portal (forum, blogs, elite dating), operating to glorify the authorities and, accordingly, to soak up budgets earmarked for outreach work with the population in the The Internet. It positions itself as a social elevator for responsible youth of any age. De facto, the portal is more a means of demonstrating innovativeness (iPod, iPad,.. iPed) and the regularity of "going to the people" by various senior administrations (often mutually exclusive ones (Valery Shantsev vs Bulavinov)).
Showcases regional progressive experts who are loyal on the main points and think systemically for use as extras at PR events. In this sense NewNN is a shell game, and a kind of online version of the Youth Parliament. Owing to the servility and contrivance of its core public's posts, it holds little appeal for live conversation, and is favored by regional Media.
The essence of the phenomenon
A peculiar social network of young innovators and positivists, made up of just a little less than entirely of activists from youth associations affiliated with the ruling party activists of youth associations, is found in every regional capital of Russia.
By selling these people to authorities starved for reputation, as cult figures and commentators of the Nizhny Novgorod Internet, one can make a decent, stable living.
So at the turn of 2009-10 (or a bit earlier) an attempt was made to create a blogging platform of a locally Nizhny Novgorod character, one that might in future claim the laurels of a "significant Nizhny Novgorod site," which could feature in reports on the embezzlement of funds allocated for PR of power structures and those adjacent to them online. The actual results in attracting an audience are quite modest, the pool of writers small as well, but that has no effect on the funding.
Faces vetted a hundred times over, of the required orientation, sluggishly, lazily and with visible strain, publish the required post once per reporting period, pre-cleared already at the writing stage: NewNN clearly lacks any riot of free creativity, the officialese cuts the eyes so unbearably that Mikhail Iosilevich and comrades can sleep perfectly soundly: not competitors, not even close. Rather — they hang in the mass reader's trust rating somewhere between ads for mighty vacuum cleaners and the unified portal of mysterious government services that nobody has ever seen.
Useful activity
The NewNN film crew produces memorable insider video news in a pseudo-folksy style (of the kind where fire victims thank a governor singing along with them). Nizhny Novgorod's television channels cannot produce that kind of content.
The site is also famous for its detailed reports on the personnel reserve of "United Russia" ("Patriotism discussed at a Nizhny Novgorod night club") and loyalist blogs of such an absurdist character that they bring users of the other Nizhny Novgorod forums a great deal of pleasure.
The site also contains a number of other useful services: a radio station broadcasting trance music, a file-sharing service that keeps relocating, a forum, a chat for advanced youth.

Svetka was a normal chick, wore a skirt, a jacket. Vitalik comes up to her, goes, Svetka I love you, like, I can't wait, let's go to the forest. Svetka goes, what if you're gonna scare me there. Vitalik goes, I won't. Svetka trustingly agreed. They come to the forest, Vitalik goes, well, let's, like, get together right there in the clearing. Svetka goes, well, that's a decent spot. Vitalik and Svetka get together, get together, Svetka screams with joy. As luck would have it, a bear was passing by. Sees the dude and the chick are having a good time. The bear got jealous. Came up and, like, clawed Vitalik's back. Vitalik got offended, and he did boxing, so, like, he kicked the bear in the nose, the bear got upset and, like, started devouring Vitalik. So then Svetka pulled out a hunting knife she had in her jacket and cut the bear up like a sausage, sort of. The bear died, it had eaten almost all of Vitalik. Svetka cried for a whole year, and then she had a baby, and named him Vitalik. |

Chanel, Kenzo and 16 gigabytes of RAM

Amid all the other rich choice, on a separate stand hang three utterly magical dresses from famous brands: Chanel, Kenzo and Paco Rabanne... The price tags show fabulous sums, but there's a note: a personal 99% discount for Katya. All three dresses are my size. They're guarded by a security guard, because there's no end to people wanting to buy them for crazy money. And so I buy these three most gorgeous dresses for literally a hundred rubles each. Ecstasy... And all this nonsense was told to me only so that I'd understand how cool this is — a new server with 2 terabytes of storage and 16 gigabytes of RAM... Horror-horror-horror... What's my point? Ah... Right... Well, I'm a girl :-))) |

Cleanup day in the city
January 15, 2011, at 20:34 Today I was at a cleanup day (subbotnik) in Kanavino Nizhny Novgorod Circus. Before that I attended a broadcast of "City N", where they discussed the topic of snow. During and after the broadcast I was extremely unhappy with what was going on. To some extent the remarks and excuses of the Administration seemed to me incorrect and implausible. There was 96 mm of precipitation, and so on. Equipment breaks down, there isn't enough time, and so on. Today, having spent 3 hours at the cleanup day (of which I personally worked only 40 min, since I mostly took photos) I saw how hard it is to clear even a small area, even with equipment. We cleared the grounds of the circus and the planetarium. 107 people and 3 graders, plus a small tractor, plus KamAZ trucks to haul it away. You won't believe it, but in just three hours they barely managed to clear the circus grounds, and only the spots with stairs and the main approaches. I just want to say that I saw with my own eyes how hard this is, and that snow removal really does happen extremely slowly. In summer I likewise knew about the fires like everyone else in Vyksa Kulebaki and cursed everyone and everything. Until I myself went to the Kulebaksky District with volunteers from the LDPR. We worked about 5 hours. And we were putting out flare-ups in a forest that had already been extinguished. That turned out to be hell on earth. The sole of my special boots melted, 1.5 liters of water grew so hot in my hands they felt like hot plates!!! After that I changed my attitude toward natural disasters. Even though the authorities aren't quick, you can still forgive them for some things sometimes, as in the case of the fires and Battling Snow in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. You just need to be a participant yourself, and then the whole complexity of the situation becomes obvious. |
