Leonid Dmitrievich Polkanov (December 20, 1913 - November 28, 1990) was a professor of the "Nuclear Reactors and Power Plants" department at the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University n.a. R.E. Alekseev named after R.E. Alekseev. Dean of the Shipbuilding and Physics-Technical Faculties of NSTU (1952-1976). Candidate of Technical Sciences.
Biography
He was born on December 20, 1913, in the village of Bezvodnoye in the Nizhny Novgorod governorate and uyezd, Kstovo volost, into a peasant family. In 1936 he graduated with honors from the shipbuilding faculty of the Gorky Polytechnic Institute, specializing in "mechanical equipment of ships." He worked as a fitter at the Gorky shipyard, and after graduating from the institute, as a design engineer at the Sormovo (disambiguation))))" plant. In 1938-1939 he fought on the Karelian Isthmus. During the war years he worked as senior design engineer and deputy head of a department at the "Krasnoye Sormovo" plant and tested T-34 tanks at the front. From October 1945 he worked at the Gorky Polytechnic Institute.
From August 1946 he was head of the Department of Steam Technology. From January 1952 to May 1962 he was dean of the Shipbuilding Faculty and associate professor of the "Ship Machinery" department. On May 30, 1962 he was transferred to the position of dean of the newly organized closed physics-technical faculty. From 1976 he worked as a professor of the department of reactor design and operation at the GPI named after A.A. Zhdanov. He worked at the institute until June 30, 1985. He authored more than 50 scientific and methodological works. He had two children. He died on November 28, 1990.
His daughter, Elvira Bochkova, is a poet and member of the Union of Writers of Russia. His granddaughter, Galina Talanova (Galina Borisovna Bochkova), is a poet and prose writer, member of the Union of Writers of Russia, and biophysicist.
