Komsomolskoe Highway is a major road in the Zarechka part of Nizhny Novgorod: it runs from Komsomolskaya Square at Molitovsky Bridge to the interchange with Moscow Highway near the former Moskva cinema, linking Leninsky District with Kanavino [2][5]. The expressway was opened in 1968, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Komsomol, and it gave its name to the square where it begins: that square only became Komsomolskaya in autumn 1971 [1][2].

Route

The highway crosses the Zarechka part of the city as a chord — not from the center outward, but transversely across the radial arterials. The city's comprehensive transport infrastructure development program lists it among the chord routes that, together with Burnakovskiy Proyezd and the chain of Kuzbasskaya — Udmurtskaya — Novikov-Priboy streets, form the backbone of the Zarechka road network [5].

The starting point is Komsomolskaya Square on the bank of the Oka, where Molitovsky Bridge descends from the Upper Town side and Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii Street and Molitovskaya Street branch off nearby [1][5]. From there the highway runs northwest, passes over Lenin Avenue on a viaduct, rises on an overpass above the railway tracks, and meets Moscow Highway on a second viaduct [2]. In road-planning documents this overpass is referred to simply as the "overpass at km 437" [5][6].

The highway exists as a single street only on maps: in the city's road management system it comprises two separate roads that meet at Railway Post No. 7. The section up to the post falls under [3][4] Leninsky District, and the section from the post to Moscow Highway falls under Kanavinsky District. The same boundary was used in the street directory of the City of Gorky to mark the border between Kanavinsky and Leninsky Districts [1].

"Highway" here is nothing more than a word in the name. Intersections are separated across different grade levels, there are at least four lanes — exactly four at Komsomolskaya Square — and on either side stand factory buildings, shopping centers, a school, and car dealerships: in every practical sense, it is laid out as an avenue [5][7][11].

How the road came to be

The postwar growth of Gorky's population and industry forced a reshaping of the transport network, which in turn transformed the city itself [2]. First in this reconstruction was the Molitovsky Bridge across the Oka, opened on November 5, 1965 [2]. A year later, the neighboring avenue was also renamed: Avtozavodskoye Highway, which in the early 1930s had connected Nizhny Novgorod to the construction site of the automobile plant, has borne the name of Lenin since 1967 — and before that was known as Entuziastov Highway [1].

Komsomolskoe Highway was opened in 1968, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Komsomol [1][2]. The new road gave the Zarechka districts access to Moscow Highway and, beyond it, to the double-deck bridge over the Volga, while the interchange of Lenin Avenue and Komsomolskoe Highway occupied the square in front of the bridge [1]. The square's name came after the road: in September 1971, the square by the Molitovsky Bridge was named Komsomolskaya [1].

The site where the highway begins had previously been used differently. On the riverbank stood the village of Molitovka and a cemetery of the same name, and at the end of 1932 a test track for Gorky Automobile Plant vehicles was built here — the area was long known as "Avtodrom" [2].

What stands along the highway

At the beginning of the road, on Komsomolskaya Square, stands the 15-story building of NPP "Polyot" — an example of Soviet modernist architecture "in glass and concrete," built in 1977; the enterprise manufactures aviation control and communications systems, and a large clock above the entrance displays the time and temperature around the clock [2]. Also in 2012, a shopping center called "KomsoMOLka" replaced a market with a warehouse and kiosks, and a plaque marking the geographic center of Nizhny Novgorod is affixed to a radio tower erected in 1995 [2].

The western half of the highway runs along an old industrial zone. An area of 27.36 hectares bounded by Aktyubinskaya Street, Fibrolitovaya Street, Moscow Highway, and Komsomolskoe Highway is occupied by Krasny Yakor Plant, the Karusel shopping center, a car dealership, School No. 109, the Alexander Nevsky Orthodox gymnasium, and residential development; the regional urban planning council approved the layout plan for this site on January 14, 2016 [11].

Another landmark along today's highway is the car trade. In July 2017, the BMW dealership "Prime Motors," part of the AGAT group of companies, opened here — the 65th such dealership in the country and, as Kommersant reported, the largest and most modern in Nizhny Novgorod Region [9].

The western end of the highway terminates at the interchange near the Moskva cinema on Geroev Avenue. The cinema itself has long since ceased to exist: in 2006 the building was leased to an investor who promised renovations but opened a shopping center instead [12]. Yet in municipal documents the interchange is still listed as "at the Moskva cinema" [5].

Transport

At Komsomolskaya Square, the highway crosses the tracks of Nizhny Novgorod tram: tram service runs across the Molitovsky Bridge, which leads out onto this square [5][7]. In the early 1970s, bus routes 7, 41, and 51 and tram routes 3, 11, 20, 21, and 23 served the square [1].

Of the current city bus routes, the A-59 runs along the highway: from April 11, 2025, it travels from the Yug microdistrict along Lenin Avenue with stops on Bauman Street and Golubev Street, then from Komsomolskaya Square along Komsomolskoe Highway, Geroev Avenue, and Chaadaev Street to the Novaya Stroyka microdistrict. This restored a direct link between the Molitovsky microdistrict, the Avtozavod factory gates, and Yuzhnoye Highway [10].

Public Transport on the highway has been promised a dedicated lane. In February 2022, the city administration included the section from Lenin Avenue to Komsomolskaya Square in a list of seventeen dedicated bus lanes to be marked out [8]. The transport infrastructure development programme includes two such measures: a dedicated lane 2.8 km long from Lenin Avenue to Komsomolskaya Square and Iyulskikh Dney Street (2021–2023) and a lane 3.16 km long from Lenin Avenue to Moscow Highway (2023–2030) [5].

The junction where the highway ends is considered by the city to be one of its most congested. The intersection of Moscow Highway, Geroev Avenue, Komsomolskoye Highway, and Burnakovskiy Proyezd, at a maximum permissible total load of 8,000 units per hour, reaches 7,709.6 — a load factor of 0.96; on the approach along Komsomolskoye Highway itself, the adjusted flow intensity is 2,182.4 units per hour against a capacity of 6,900. Together with the intersections of Moscow Highway with Kuzbasskaya Street and Sergey Akimov Street, this junction has been named among the city's most problematic interchanges [5].

Repairs and Plans

In 2023, both carriageways of the highway were repaired. In Leninsky District, work ran from building No. 1v on Komsomolskoye Highway to building No. 37a on Ukrainskaya Street: 1.510 km, 33,283 square metres of roadway and 2,360 metres of pavements, at a cost of 79,549,413.73 roubles. In Kanavino — from building No. 143 on Zelenodolskaya Street to the same building No. 37a on Ukrainskaya Street: 1.100 km, 26,850 square metres of roadway and 3,841 metres of pavements, at a cost of 67,747,403.48 roubles. Both contracts were carried out by OOO Avtobelstroy; the work was accepted in November 2023 [3][4].

In 2024, under the national project "Safe Quality Roads", the overpass at kilometre 437 and the transport interchange at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Komsomolskoye Highway were brought up to standard, along with a section of Moscow Highway from Komsomolskoye Highway to the city exit [6][13]. The road national project involves comprehensive works: in addition to the roadway, kerb stones and signs are replaced, pedestrian paths are restored, bus stops are installed, and markings are applied with thermoplastic [6].

In the summer of 2026, traffic on the highway was restricted again: from 6:00 a.m. on 5 July until 5 August, monolithic sections of tram track were being constructed near the intersection with Komsomolskaya Square. Initially two right-hand lanes were closed, and from 21 July two left-hand lanes, with traffic kept to two lanes [7].

The largest planned measure concerns the western end of the road: the transport infrastructure development programme provides for the reconstruction of Moscow Highway, including the rebuilding of the Moscow Highway — Burnakovskiy Proyezd — Geroev Avenue — Komsomolskoye Highway interchange (3.8 km, 1,014.8 million roubles, 2020–2025). The same location is also earmarked for a grade-separated pedestrian crossing over Komsomolskoye Highway near buildings Nos. 86–94A on Moscow Highway, and for a longer-term project by 2030 — a new road from the Southern Bypass of Nizhny Novgorod to Komsomolskoye Highway, 15 km long, at a cost of 6,604.1 million roubles [5].

The areas alongside the highway will also change. The planning project near the Krasny Yakor plant proposes shifting the factory boundary and building on the freed land four 18-storey residential buildings for a thousand residents, along with a 60-place kindergarten, a business and administrative centre, a chapel attached to a gymnasium, a building materials retail complex, and parking for nearly 1,100 cars [11].
