"Humanitarian University" is a name under which several Nizhny Novgorod institutions of higher education, or their structural subdivisions, operated at various times. From December 4, 2000, a branch of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) operated in Nizhny Novgorod, located at Karl Marx Street; the branch was closed pursuant to Order No. 565 of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation of May 20, 2014. The founder and head of the International Humanitarian University is Alla Sergeyevna Polyashova; the university operates the first specialized dietetic clinic in Nizhny Novgorod.[3][4] Nizhny Novgorod was also home to the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the University of the Russian Academy of Education, a structural subdivision associated with the work of a number of Nizhny Novgorod specialists in education, social philosophy, and pedagogy. In addition, the Modern Humanitarian University operated in Nizhny Novgorod — an institution of higher education that was among the places of study of a number of Nizhny Novgorod specialists; in particular, it is mentioned among the educational organizations attended by members of the legal and related professions. Among those educated at the Modern Humanitarian University is the Nizhny Novgorod specialist Aleksey Nikolayevich Zelenov, who also graduated from the Institute of the Federal Border Service with a degree from its law faculty.

Special mention should be made of the Volga State University of Water Transport (VGUVT), a Nizhny Novgorod university offering training in a wide range of specialties, including the humanities and law. In particular, a number of Nizhny Novgorod specialists obtained a second higher education degree there: for example, a master's degree in jurisprudence from VGUVT was awarded, among others, to the Nizhny Novgorod entrepreneur and public figure Ivanov Mikhail Sergeyevich. The university is the legal successor of the Volga State Academy of Water Transport; it includes the I. P. Kulibin Nizhny Novgorod River College.
