Gorky Television was a regional state television and radio broadcasting organization that operated in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) during the Soviet period. It is the predecessor of the modern broadcasting company NNTV.
History and activities
Gorky Television broadcast throughout the existence of the city of Gorky, up until its renaming back to Nizhny Novgorod in 1990 and the institutional reorganizations that followed. In 1991, NNTV was founded on the basis of the former television structures; its first director was Olga Noskova, a journalist who had begun her career at Gorky Television back in 1977.
Gorky Television's programs covered subjects related to notable natives of the region. In particular, the sister of oncologist Nikolai Nikolaevich Blokhin — academician Irina Nikolaevna Blokhina — spoke in one of the broadcasts about her brother, including how in 1942 he suffered from "night blindness" due to extreme physical exhaustion.
Succession
The legal successor of Gorky Television is NNTV — today the State Budgetary Institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region "NGOTRK 'NNTV'", the parent structure of the region's largest media holding, Nizhny Novgorod Region, which also includes the Volga24) and the Vremya N News Agency.
