City Day — the main annual celebration of Nizhny Novgorod, tied to the founding date of the city. Since 2019 it has been marked on the third Saturday of August [1]; before that the date was moved twice, and over fifteen years the holiday managed to be a September, a June and an August one.

The September that would not do

In the autumn of 2011 the head of the Nizhny Novgorod city administration, Oleg Kondrashov, proposed moving the holiday away from the beginning of September: the weather at that time is usually foul [2].

The discussion dragged on for eighteen months. On 14 May 2013 public hearings were held on amendments to the city charter — 127 people took part, and the outcome was a recommendation to put the draft before the City Duma on 29 May [2].

The arguments on both sides are recorded in the report of the hearings. Deputy Vladimir Volkov saw savings as the main point: staging the holiday cost the budget 14 million roubles. Sergei Gorin, director of the administration’s department of culture, sport and youth policy, objected to moving it to 12 June — combining it with Russia Day might mean the local holiday overshadowed the national one [2].

After the summer break, city residents want something big and shared. Besides, City Day has traditionally been the occasion for summing up the results of many city undertakings — right after a productive spring and summer. [2]

The return to August

From 2014 the holiday was held on 12 June, together with Russia Day. That arrangement lasted five years.

In April 2019 a round table came out by a majority for the third Saturday of August: the argument was that the city should have a holiday of its own, not merged with a national one, and that it should be marked at a time convenient for residents. On 14 May the people of Nizhny Novgorod backed the proposal at public hearings, and on 22 May the City Duma amended the charter — 33 votes in favour, one against, one deputy not voting. That year the holiday fell on 17 August [1].

The eight hundredth anniversary

The largest celebration was the jubilee of 21 August 2021. The whole year was given over to it: the programme of events ran to more than 150 items, and the centrepiece was the gala show "The Beginning of the New", staged by Ilya Averbukh [3].

How the holiday works

The main venue traditionally remains Minin and Pozharsky Square by the walls of the Kremlin; parallel programmes run in the district parks, so the celebration is spread across the whole city [4].

Each year the holiday is given an overall theme, and the evening concerts take place at the main venues of the districts. In 2025 City Day fell on 16 August, the city turned 804, and all the venues were united by the theme "Heroes Among Us" [5].

The 805th anniversary was marked on 15 August 2026. That year the number of venues was cut to six and the headline performers to two: Oleg Gazmanov appeared by the kremlin at 20:30, and Sergei Galanin with the band SerGa in Shveytsariya Park at 21:00. At 20:00 came the premiere of the song "Nizhny-805", written with the help of artificial intelligence and with the participation of local residents [4].

The remaining venues were set up in the Svetloyarsky, Dubki, May Day and Avtozavodsky parks. Most of them ran from 12:00 to 22:00; the main celebration by the kremlin ended at 21:30 [4].

We have kept the meanings that matter most to us, the people of Nizhny Novgorod. The holiday will bring the generations together at the stages, tell our unique history and show the beauty of our traditions through crafts, folk songs and dances. [4]
