Books About the Nizhny Novgorod Region is a list of local-history publications about Nizhny Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod Region: nineteenth-century descriptions and guidebooks, Soviet sketches of history and architecture, reference books, albums, and scholarly collections. Eighty-six publications are gathered below, grouped by topic. A more comprehensive recommended reading list is maintained by the V. I. Lenin Regional Scientific Library: it includes over two hundred books published between 1824 and 2018[1].

Publishers

Most Soviet books about the region were published by the Volgo-Vyatskoye Book Publishing House. It was formed in 1963 by the merger of the Gorky and Kirov book publishing houses and operated in Gorky; the Kirov publishing house was not dissolved, however, but became a branch[2].

Among modern publishers, the local-history line is carried by the Nizhny Novgorod publisher Kvarts, founded in 2003 as part of the production and commercial firm of the same name. It publishes the reference and information series "SITI" ("785 Questions and Answers About Nizhny Novgorod," "100 Biographies of Nizhny's Houses"), the series "Outstanding Fellow Countrymen" and "Family Memory," as well as illustrated catalogs of the monuments of Gorodets, Balakhna, and Arzamas. In August 2010, the Federal Agency for the Press recognized the publisher with a commendation for its contribution to Russian book publishing[3].

Some compendia were also published outside the book publishing houses: N. F. Filatov's "Nizhny Novgorod: Architecture of the 14th to Early 20th Century" was published in 1994 by the editorial and publishing center "Nizhegorodskiye Novosti" in the series "Encyclopedia of the Nizhny Novgorod Territory."
