"Book of Memory of Nizhny Novgorod Region" (also published under the title "Book of Memory of Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Region") is a multivolume documentary publication dedicated to residents of Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Region who were killed or went missing in action during the Great Patriotic War. The publication appeared in several numbered volumes over a period of years. The full official title of the series is "Book of Memory of Nizhny Novgorod Residents Who Fell in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945"; it has been published on behalf of the Russian Federation and Nizhny Novgorod Region since 1994 by the publishing house "Nizhpoligraf".[1]

Composition and contents

The publication appeared in volumes covering individual districts of the Region. Among the best-known volumes are Volume 6, devoted to materials on Voskresensky District, as well as Volumes 14 and 16, which include information on Avtozavodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod. Volume 20, published in 2020 for the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory, runs to 295 pages; it was published in Nizhny Novgorod by Nizhpoligraf, with S. G. Antonov and A. M. Goreva as compilers and O. A. Barinova as chair of the editorial board.[1] Each volume contains name lists of natives of the corresponding territory who were killed, died of wounds, or went missing in action.

Use in local history research

The Book of Memory is widely used by researchers to reconstruct the biographies of fallen soldiers. For example, in preparing the research project "Military Memorial of the Urban-Type Settlement of Voskresenskoye-on-Vetluga," the local historian V. N. Nefyodov used the sixth volume of the publication alongside the databases of Memorial", "Podvig Naroda" ("Feat of the People"), and materials of the Central Archive of the Russian Ministry of Defense. In researching the Staro-Avtozavodsky mass military burial site, V. N. Nefyodov and I. V. Nefyodov consulted Volumes 14 and 16 together with registration cards of those who died in hospitals, alphabetical registers of evacuation hospitals, and data from the electronic databases "Pamyat Naroda" ("People's Memory") and "Podvig Naroda." Volumes of the series are held in libraries of Avtozavodsky District of Nizhny Novgorod: the Library and Leisure Center, the Lermontov, Mamin-Sibiryak, Mayakovsky, Radishchev, Bianki, Makarenko, and Adrianov libraries, the "Family Reading Center," and the Center for Business and Legal Information.[1]
