The Nizhny Novgorod State Regional Universal Scientific Library named after V. I. Lenin (NGOUNB) is the largest public library in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, tracing its history to 1861, when a municipal public library opened in the city.[3] The institution operates as a state-funded cultural establishment of the Nizhny Novgorod Region (GBUK NO NGOUNB) and is overseen by the Ministry of Culture of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[3] The library is located at 3 Varvarskaya Street, Nizhny Novgorod.[1]

The NGOUNB is one of the largest regional libraries in the country, the principal state repository of the region, and the regional center for library local studies.[3] The library's holdings number more than 4 million items, covering a wide range of subject areas in both print and electronic formats.[3] The library also serves as a methodological center for public libraries throughout the Nizhny Novgorod Region.[3]

The institution carries out extensive cultural and educational work and provides services in electronic format.[3] Its resources include an electronic catalog comprising a unified catalog, a union catalog of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, a catalog of rare books of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, and a corporate catalog of municipal libraries.[2] The library's website hosts digital collections devoted to the The History of Nizhny Novgorod, local studies, the works of M. Gorky, the activities of A. S. Gatsiskiy, the theatrical life of the region, and other topics.[1] The library publishes the periodical Panorama of the Region's Library Life, organizes both virtual and in-person exhibitions, and holds local-history reading sessions and professional competitions.

These reading sessions have their own sequential numbering: in November 2003, for example, the 332nd session took place, dedicated to the 185th anniversary of the writer Pavel Ivanovich Melnikov (Andrey Pechersky) and held in the library's exhibition hall as part of the book exhibition "A Writer of Beautiful Old Russia," assembled from the NGOUNB collections.[4][1] The institution also houses a Book Museum.[1]

History and recognition

The library traces its history to 1861, when the municipal public library was opened.[3] In 2026 the institution marked its 165th anniversary.[1] In 2022 Nizhny Novgorod was awarded the status of Library Capital of Russia, an honor reflected in the professional events organized on the premises of the NGOUNB.[1]
