The celebration of Nizhny Novgorod's 805th anniversary took place on August 15, 2026. The festivities were held across six city venues under the common theme "A City That Brings People Together."[1]
Program and Venues
Mayor Yuri Shalabayev announced the parameters of the celebration on August 8, 2026: compared to previous years, the number of venues was reduced to six and the number of invited headlining performers to two. The decision was motivated by a cost-saving approach while preserving the celebration itself.[2] The main events took place on Minin and Pozharsky Square, with additional events held in Shveytsariya Park, Svetloyarsky Park, Dubki Park, 1 Maya Park, and the Avtozavodskiy Park. Most venues operated from 12:00 to 22:00; the festivities at the walls of the Kremlin concluded at 21:30.[1]
The program included patriotic zones, exhibitions of modern weaponry, meetings with participants of the special military operation, masterclasses in traditional Volga Region crafts, folk games, round dances, and performances by children's bloggers as part of the main concert on Minin Square.[1] On the evening of August 15, Oleg Gazmanov performed on Minin and Pozharsky Square. At 20:00 on Minin and Pozharsky Square, the premiere of the song "Nizhny-805," created with the use of artificial intelligence with the participation of Nizhny Novgorod residents, took place.[3] (start time 20:30); in Shveytsariya Park, Sergey Galanin and the rock band "SerGA" performed (start time 21:00).[1] There was no fireworks display that day — as had also been the case the year before.[4]
Alongside the celebrations, from 13 to 16 August, the city hosted the ballooning festival "Privolzhskaya Fiesta" and Volga Regatta 2026".[2] An art installation titled "805" was erected on Theatre Square. As part of the "Music of Balconies" festival, singer polnalyubvi gave a special acoustic concert at 17:00 on the balcony of the Nizhny Novgorod Seminary building on Minin and Pozharsky Square.[5]
Context and the Authorities' Position
In announcing the celebration on his Maks channel, Shalabayev emphasized that forgoing City Day under conditions of austerity would be a "grave mistake": "Nizhny Novgorod is a city that unites." The expanded patriotic component was described as an integral part of the festivities.[6] Governor Gleb Nikitin and Presidential Plenipotentiary Representative to the Volga Federal District Igor Komarov congratulated Nizhny Novgorod residents on the anniversary.
The "Volga Regatta — 2026" was held for the sixth time; the programme included sailing yacht competitions in several classes, a SUP parade with approximately 200 participants, and windsurfer performances near the River Station building.[5]
Night glow displays with balloons and tethered ascents at "Privolzhskaya Fiesta" were not held this time — the organizers cited weather conditions and current security measures in the region.[5]
On the evening of 15 August, from 21:00 to 02:00, a festive projection show (mapping) dedicated to the city's 805th anniversary was staged on the Zachatyevskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and the adjoining sections of the wall; its scenes depicted symbols of local culture, history, technology, industry, and tourism.[5]
