Yubileyny Boulevard is a boulevard in the Sormovo District of Nizhny Novgorod, laid out in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. It runs along the bank of the Parasha River, adjacent to Sormovskiy Park, and is one of the most popular recreational spots for residents of the district.[1]

History and Construction

The area where the boulevard now stands was previously a marshy lowland with wooden houses descending from a hillside to the bank of the Parasha. Construction of a residential microdistrict here began in the early 1960s, in line with the nationwide policy of rapid, large-scale prefabricated panel housing construction as a replacement for Stalinist buildings with their columns and ornamental stucco. On the site of the village of Daryino, the first five-story panel-construction apartment blocks appeared — built in part by the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant, which opened a dedicated panel-manufacturing workshop for the purpose. The first buildings on what is now Yubileyny Boulevard were erected between 1961 and 1964.[1]

The second phase involved creating the section of the boulevard that curves around the Parasha River. An architectural ensemble of five- and nine-story panel apartment buildings was constructed here. Specialists at Gorkygrazdanproyekt used the Moscow district of Cheryomushki as their model. The landscaping plan for the boulevard was designed by architect Boris Sergeyevich Nelyubin — who also designed individual 10- and 12-story residential buildings on Lenin Square, the interiors of the House of Books, the development scheme for Mir Boulevard, and the layout of the Meschera Lake microdistrict.[1]

Before construction could begin, hundreds of wooden houses had to be demolished and the channel of the Parasha widened. Work started on Shimborsky Street — at this end of the boulevard, a marble pedestal bearing a commemorative plaque was installed. The boulevard was officially inaugurated on 29 April 1967 and opened on 2 November of the same year. The construction effort was a large-scale public undertaking.[1]

Name and Current State

The boulevard received the name "Yubileyny" (Jubilee) in honor of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution, to which its founding was dedicated.[1] The boulevard's coordinates are: 56.345314, 43.857522.[2] Today the boulevard remains a favorite walking destination for residents of Sormovo District and visitors to the city.[1]
