Bulvar Mira (Peace Boulevard) is a street in the Kanavinsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, running through the area formerly occupied by the Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka. It was laid out on the site of the Betankurovsky Canal, which existed at least from the early twentieth century; by the Soviet period the canal had been filled in and a boulevard created in its place, receiving its current name.[1]
History: from canal to boulevard
In historical photographs from the early twentieth century (photographs by M. P. Dmitriev dated 1900–1916) the site of the present boulevard is still referred to as the Betankurovsky Canal — part of the hydraulic engineering system of the Nizhny Novgorod Yarmarka.[1] The entire extensive yarmarka grounds, on which Dolzhanskaya, Manufakturnaya, and Sovnarkomovskaya Streets, Yarmarochny Proyezd, and Bulvar Mira were subsequently laid out, were in the pre-revolutionary period occupied by trading arcades: by approximate count, the number of stalls reached 2,520.
Development and appearance
In photographs from 1986–1987 the boulevard appears as an established urban street with multi-storey residential buildings. Visible in the boulevard's axis is house no. 34 on Sovnarkomovskaya Street.[2] A residential building of the same period is recorded at Bulvar Mira, no. 5.[3] At Bulvar Mira, no. 4, stands School no. 143, known from photographs of 1966 and 1968–1969 showing a view from the side of Dolzhanskaya Street.[4][5]
