Naidenko Valentin Vasilyevich (1938-2005) — rector of the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering from 1987 to 2005, full member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, honored worker of science and technology of the Russian Federation, member of the Supreme Ecological Council of the Russian Federation. Laureate of the USSR Council of Ministers Prize and of the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology.

Key facts of activity
He began his professional career as an engineer at the Gorky Design and Technology Research Institute. At the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering he went through every stage of an academic and scientific career: postgraduate student, assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor, head of the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage, vice-rector for research.
Monographs
"Optimization of the treatment processes for natural and waste water", "Revival of the Volga — a step toward saving Russia", "Computational mathematics for environmental engineers", "Cleaning and disposal of electroplating industry wastewater" and others. He published 467 scientific works, and his scientific and technical developments are protected by 110 author's certificates and patents. He was the founder (1998) and head of the UNESCO Chair "Ecologically Safe Development of the Volga Basin". From 1999 to 2005 he provided scientific direction of the international forums "The Great Rivers", held annually in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. He created a scientific school in the field of environmental engineering and trained about 50 candidates and doctors of science.
Achievements
He was awarded the Order of Honor and the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland".
The title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Nizhny Novgorod" was conferred by resolution No. 37 of the City Duma of Nizhny Novgorod dated June 23, 1999.
