Transfiguration Cathedral (Spaso-Preobrazhensky Sobor) is an Orthodox church in the selo of Purekh in Chkalovsky District, Nizhny Novgorod Region, founded on the initiative of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. The cathedral is the village's main architectural and historical landmark.[1]
History
Construction of the church was begun by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who built it in honor of the liberation of Moscow — Purekh was his patrimonial estate (votchina). The church was subsequently expanded and rebuilt many times, acquiring an appearance characteristic of later eras.[1]
Description and present condition
Visitors note the eclectic architecture of the cathedral, along with a generally pleasant impression of the building. Next to the cathedral stands a monument to Pozharsky, from which there is a picturesque view of the church. The cathedral is active: services and sacraments are held there.[1]
