Stantsionnaya Street is a street in the Sormovsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, established no later than the early 20th century. It was formerly known as Novaya Kanava.[1]
History and Appearance
At the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, the street ran in immediate Railway Station (Vokzal) of Sormovo. Historical photographs from 1900–1917 show, in the background along the street, the Pharmacy of the Sormovo Plants — one of the notable buildings of the working settlement of Sormovo at that time.[1] The same pharmacy appears in a photograph taken in 1913 in the vicinity of house No. 62.[2]
The name "Stantsionnaya" reflects the street's proximity to Nizhny Novgorod Hydroelectric Station, around which the urban infrastructure of the largest factory settlement in Nizhny Novgorod Governorate took shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The contract for the extension of the Sormovo–Meschera line to the Sormovskaya station was signed in August 2022 at a cost of 19.4 billion rubles, with the Mosproekt-3 Group serving as general contractor. As of 2026, the station's completion deadline has been pushed back: City Hall representatives cited late 2029 as the projected date. In 2026, Stantsionnaya Street fell within the preparation zone for construction of the new Sormovskaya metro station — the terminus of the Sormovo–Meschera line extension.[3][3][3]
In March 2026, the roof of an annex to an abandoned building on Stantsionnaya Street collapsed: a 13-year-old teenager was killed and two others were injured; according to the city administration, the structure had already been out of use and was being prepared for demolition.[4]
