Demolition of garages for the Sormovskaya metro station is a set of demolition works that began in late August 2026 on Stantsionnaya Street in the Sormovo District of Nizhny Novgorod. The work is aimed at clearing a construction site for the new metro station, which will become part of the extension of the Nizhny Novgorod subway to Sormovo.

Background

The contract for extending the metro to Sormovo, worth 19.4 billion rubles, was signed in August 2022.[1] The general contractor is JSC "Mosproekt-3-3".[2] The project for preparing the station site was published in October 2023.[3]

The development of the design and cost estimate documentation is divided into 8 stages. Three of them cover site preparation: relocating utility lines, clearing the site, and ensuring its readiness for construction. Another three stages include building the assembly and disassembly chambers for the tunnel boring machines, driving the tunnels, and erecting the station structures with the adjoining tunnel facilities. The final two stages concern the landscaping of the area around the future station and along the metro line.[1]

The location of the station on Stantsionnaya Street near the railway platform did not enjoy broad support: according to an October 2022 survey, only 14.62% of respondents backed this option, while 79.23% favored placing the station at the "Tsentr Sormova" ("Sormovo Center") stop. The authorities settled on the Stantsionnaya Street option because it avoids a prolonged blockage of traffic flows.[3]

The construction zone affected 756 real estate properties, including seven garage cooperatives: "Bytovik", Varya", "on Stantsionnaya Street", "No. 14 on Iznoskov Street", "Levinka-2", "No. 3 on Kalashnikov Street", and "25-Sormovo".[1] As of July 2026, more than 85% of the land plots in the work zone had been transferred into municipal ownership: of 726 properties, 627 had been acquired.[1][2]

Demolition Work

In July 2026, the customer for the metro extension, the municipal institution GUMMiD, signed two demolition contracts. The contractor selected was OOO Volgatekhstroy, and the total value of the contracts came to 40.5 million rubles.[2][3]

Construction equipment began work in the last days of August 2026. The first to be torn down were the non-residential buildings opposite building No. 11 on Dmitry Pavlov Street.[2] The demolition covers non-residential buildings and garages within the boundaries of Stantsionnaya and Shcherbakov Streets, as well as the garage cooperatives "25-Sormovo," "No. 3 on Kalashnikov Street," and "Levinka-2."[2][3] The contractor is required to complete the demolition by mid-November 2026.[2][3]

The zone of the future construction site contains a red-brick house of pre-revolutionary architecture at 62 Stantsionnaya Street. At the public hearings in 2023, the owner spoke out against its seizure, pointing to the building's century-long history and its restoration, which preserved its authentic appearance. The general contractor, AO Mosproekt-3, denied rumors of plans to locate a headquarters there, but did not comment on the building's future fate; at the time demolition began, the excavators had not touched it.[2]

Station Construction Timeline

Originally, the opening of Sormovskaya station was planned for 2026, but the commissioning deadline was subsequently pushed back to the end of 2029.[2][3] The main construction and installation work is planned to begin after the design is completed and the documentation, including the estimated cost, is approved by Glavgosexpertiza of Russia.[1]

As of early October 2026, work on the first group of sites had been fully completed: all 181 sites had been demolished, after which debris disposal and landscaping of the cleared area began; for the second block of 222 planned sites, 158 had been demolished by the same date, or 71% of the total. In addition to the sites already covered by contracts, a new municipal contract for another 79 structures was planned for October 2026; another 65 sites were at that point undergoing the compulsory acquisition procedure, and the clearing of the entire territory was expected to be finished by the end of 2026.[4]
