Demolition of garages for the Sormovskaya metro station — a series of dismantlement works that began in late August 2026 on Stantsionnaya Street in the Sormovo (disambiguation) of Nizhny Novgorod. The works are aimed at clearing a construction site for the new metro station, which will form part of the Metro into Sormovo.
Background
The contract for the metro extension into Sormovo, valued at 19.4 billion rubles, was signed in August 2022.[2] The general contractor is JSC Mosproekt-3.[4] The site preparation project was published in October 2023.[5]
The design and estimate documentation is divided into 8 stages. Three of them cover site preparation: relocation of engineering utilities, clearance of the site, and making it ready for construction. A further three stages involve the installation of assembly and disassembly chambers for tunnel boring complexes, the boring of tunnels, and the construction of the station structures along with the adjacent tunnel facilities. The final two stages concern the landscaping of the area around the future station and along the metro line.[2]
The station's placement on Stantsionnaya Street near the railway platform did not enjoy broad public support: according to an October 2022 survey, only 14.62% of respondents favored this option, while 79.23% preferred locating the station at the "Tsentr Sormova" stop. The authorities settled on the Stantsionnaya Street option because it avoids prolonged disruption to traffic flows.[5]
The construction zone encompasses 756 real estate properties, including seven garage cooperatives: Bytоvik, Varya, "on Stantsionnaya Street", Iznoskova Street", Levinka-2, "No. 3 on Kalashnikova Street", and "25-Sormovo".[2] As of July 2026, more than 85% of the land plots in the work zone had been transferred to municipal ownership: of 726 properties, 627 had been acquired.[2][4]
Demolition works
In July 2026, the client for the metro extension — the Municipal State Institution "GUMMiD" — signed two demolition contracts. The contractor selected was OOO Volgatekkhstroy, with a combined contract value of 40.5 million rubles.[4][5]
Construction equipment began work in the final days of August 2026. The first structures to be demolished were the non-residential buildings opposite house No. 11 on Dmitriya Pavlova Street.[4] The demolition covers non-residential buildings and garages within the boundaries of Stantsionnaya and Shcherbakova Streets, as well as the garage cooperatives "25-Sormovo", "No. 3 on Kalashnikova Street", and "Levinka-2".[4][5] The contractor is required to complete the demolition by mid-November 2026.[4][5]
Within the future construction site stands a pre-revolutionary red-brick building at Stantsionnaya, 62. During public hearings in 2023, the owner opposed its acquisition, citing the building's century-long history and a restoration carried out to preserve its authentic appearance. The general contractor JSC Mosproekt-3 denied rumors of plans to use the building as a site office, but made no comment on its future fate; at the time demolition began, the excavators had not touched it.[4]
Construction timeline for the station
The opening of Sormovskaya station was originally planned for 2026, but the commissioning date has since been pushed back to late 2029.[4][5] The main construction and installation works are expected to begin after the completion of the design process and approval of the documentation, including the estimated cost, by Glavgosexpertiza of Russia.[2]
