The Public Shops Building «Skoba» is a historic mid-19th-century trade building on Rozhdestvenskaya, in the Historic Center. It was built in 1859–1861 to a design by architect Uzhumedsky-Gritsevich.[2] In March 2026 the building was officially entered into the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Objects of the Peoples of Russia as a monument of regional significance.[1]

History and significance

The building stands on the odd-numbered side of Rozhdestvenskaya Street and lies within the boundaries of the «Old Nizhny Novgorod» territory; it is part of the Historic Buildings of the mid-19th century.[2] For its distinctive shape the building acquired the Skoba» (meaning "clamp" or "hasp"), which over time passed to the whole surrounding district and became attached to that area.[2]

The area where the building stands is linked to several significant events in the city's history: here Minin) to rise against foreign invaders, a bargemen's market once operated, and the night shelter of Bugrov was located.[2]

Expert review and heritage status

In the autumn of 2025 the public shops building received the status of an identified cultural heritage object.[2] A state historical-cultural expert review was then carried out by restorer and lawyer Sharpudin Khautiev, first deputy director of the Ostankino and Kuskovo State Museum-Reserve in Moscow; the review was commissioned by the company «SMART Engineering».[2] The review confirmed the authenticity of the building materials, structures and decorative elements, and established the building's historical, historical-urban-planning, architectural-artistic and cultural significance.[2] Public discussion of the review's findings took place from 26 February to 6 March 2025.[2]

The status was granted at the same time as the Church of the Three Hierarchs was recognised as a cultural heritage object of regional significance.[1]

Present state

The building houses the «KUPNO. Start» centre and commercial organisations; in particular, the «Gus v Yablokakh» ("Goose with Apples") restaurant operates within its walls.[1][2] The development of the area is linked to the goals of the national project «Tourism and Hospitality», aimed at preserving the historic environment and attracting tourists.[1]
