The Makarovsky Trade and Warehouse Building is an architectural monument of the mid-19th century, located at Ilyinskaya Street, 1 (sections A and B) in the Upper Town of Nizhny Novgorod. The building was erected in 1857 to a design by architect N. A. Frelikh and is associated with the merchant N. E. Makarovsky. It is included in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Objects (historical and cultural monuments) of the peoples of the Russian Federation under the category of regional protection.[1]

Architecture and Purpose

The building was intended for trade and storage of goods. This type of construction, combining retail and warehouse functions under one roof, was characteristic of the Nizhny Novgorod merchant class in the second half of the 19th century. The project was designed by architect N. A. Frelikh.[1]

Protected Status

The building has been placed under state protection as a monument of regional significance; the document of acceptance under state protection is No. 33. As of 1 January 2005, Object IP is included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of the peoples of the Russian Federation.[1]

The complex was built on the site of a three-story brick house that had been severely damaged by fire and stood at the foot of Ilyinskaya Hill.[2]

The buildings are constructed in the brick style — a rationalist tendency within 19th-century eclecticism, distinguished by the replacement of stucco ornamentation and plaster with decorative motifs executed in exposed brick.[2]

An important urban-planning feature of the complex is that its buildings, following the contour of the slope, have different levels and a varying number of stories (two and three), while their façades face three major thoroughfares: Ilyinskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street, and Zelensky Descent.[2]

The building façades are unplastered but painted in light tones; the white color draws attention to the details — window surrounds, cornices, and pilasters.[2]
