Nikolai Adamovich Frelich was a Nizhny Novgorod architect of the second half of the 19th century who held the post of chief city architect of Nizhny Novgorod. Grandfather of the actor Andrei Fait.
Career
Frelich was one of the most respected architects of Nizhny Novgorod of his time.[1] In 1859–1860, the Church of the Three Hierarchs was built to his design at the intersection of Kanatnaya and Nemetskaya streets — one of the few surviving examples in the city of the mid-to-late 19th century "Ton style" of Russian architecture. Construction was financed by second-guild merchant Luka Maksimovich Koptev; the church's bell tower became a dominant landmark of the surrounding area.
Family
The architect's daughter, Anna Nikolaevna Frelich, graduated from the Nizhny Novgorod Institute for Noble Maidens, then left for the Higher Women's Courses in St. Petersburg. During her time in St. Petersburg, the Frelich family was visited by Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko), who had settled in Nizhny Novgorod after his Siberian exile. Anna Nikolaevna later married the physician and Narodnik revolutionary Andrei Feit and became the mother of the actor Andrei Fait.[1]
At some point Nikolai Adamovich himself left the post of chief city architect; his son (Anna Nikolaevna's brother, who also bore the name Nikolai) was by then already serving a sentence in Siberian exile.[1]
