The Sennaya Square Ski Jump is a sports facility in Nizhny Novgorod, located on Sennaya Square, and part of the Olympic Reserve Sports School for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined. The history of structures on this site goes back to the 1950s; the current K-60 ski jump, built of reinforced concrete and metal, was opened on March 6, 2021.
History: From Demolition to New Construction
The complex of old ski jumps built in the 1950s on Sennaya Square was demolished in 2012. The city authorities announced their intention to build a new complex, but the project was frozen for a long time due to a lack of funding.[1]
In early 2018, amendments to the targeted investment program of Nizhny Novgorod Region for 2018–2020 provided funding for the construction of the first K-60 ski jump. In February 2018, the revised project successfully passed state expert review. According to the design and estimate documentation, the construction cost came to 295.2 million rubles. The facility includes a ski jump of reinforced concrete and metal, an administrative and amenities building, stands for coaches and judges, security quarters, the necessary utility networks, and landscaping of the slope.[1]
In June 2018, by decision of the Nizhny Novgorod administration, the "Specialized Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined" (SDYuSShOR), its property, and the K-40 ski jump with an area of 450 square meters were transferred to regional ownership.[1]
By December 2019, the K-60 ski jump under construction was about 90% complete. The facility's buildings were connected to water supply networks: JSC "Nizhny Novgorod Vodokanal" laid two water mains to the ski jump, fed from a trunk water main 600 mm in diameter, and a isolation valve was installed at the main inlet for backup water supply. The handover of the facility was planned for the first quarter of 2020.[2]
Opening and Operation
The official opening of the K-60 ski jump took place on March 6, 2021. On the same day, the facility hosted the Nizhny Novgorod Region Championship and Junior Championship in ski jumping, during which the first record on the new structure was set. The ski jump is intended for training students of the state-funded NOSSHOR for ski jumping and Nordic combined, as well as of Municipal Sports School No. 6 for Nordic combined; regional and all-Russian competitions for boys and girls under 15 are held here.
The K-60 ski jump is the first of a planned complex of ski jumps at Sennaya — three in total are planned to be built.[2]
Cable Lift
In the summer of 2021, construction began next to the ski jump on a cable lift that was meant to connect the facility with the Rowing Canal embankment. The general contractor, the company Invest-Group, repeatedly postponed the completion deadlines. The work was finished in the spring of 2023. In September 2023, Rostekhnadzor carried out an inspection and issued a permit to put the lift into operation; the facility was handed over to the management of the state-funded NOSSHOR for ski jumping and Nordic combined. The lift is designed for 37 two-seat cabins.[3]
