Ski jump — a structure for ski jumping. A large jump stood at Sennaya Square; a photograph of a competition held there dates from the 1940s. In February 1977, the USSR Cup in ski jumping was held in Gorky on the Bolshoy Gorky Jump — at that time the largest in the USSR. The structure was dismantled in 2003, and a second large jump of 84 metres was taken down in 2012. In 2012, the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region allocated 2.4 billion rubles for the construction of a new ski jump near Sennaya Square: 9.4 hectares were set aside for the three-level structure, with the highest point of the jump at 68.4 m and a maximum in-run length of 105.5 m; Austrian specialists' expertise was drawn upon during the design phase, and upon completion the facility was to meet the requirements of world championships.
Construction of the new training centre for ski jumping and Nordic combined near Sennaya Square was postponed on multiple occasions: in 2014 due to the Sochi Olympics, and in 2018 due to the FIFA World Cup. The complex was planned to include a 60-metre jump suitable for year-round operation, intended for training and competitions for children under 15, as well as a school administration building, and coaches' and judges' stands.[1][2][1][1] The subsequent fate of the facility remains to be clarified.
On the grounds of School No. 131 in Nizhny Novgorod, a training ski jump was installed — the first and only one in the Nizhny Novgorod Region to be located on a school site. The structure consists of a metal framework on a soft, impact-safe surface with stainless steel guides; landings are made on a specialised artificial turf, allowing the apparatus to be used year-round. According to Evgeniy Vashurin, president of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Federation of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined, around 400 children in the region train in ski jumping and Nordic combined at a professional level, a third of whom train at School No. 131.[4][3]
