Sarov Institute of Physics and Technology (SarFTI) is a branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI), located in the city of Sarov (formerly Arzamas-16) in Nizhny Novgorod Region.[1] The institute trains specialists in physics, engineering, and related disciplines, and is closely tied to the work of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center — VNIIEF, which is located in Sarov.
Structure and Activities
The institute includes a Faculty of Humanities with a Department of Humanities. Within the Faculty of Humanities there is a Department of Theology, located at 6 Dukhova Street, Building 2, Sarov; the department is headed by Oksana Valeryevna Savchenko. The Department of Theology offers a program in "Theology" (part-time/evening format, five years); graduates receive the qualification "theologian, instructor." Applicants from other cities are accepted, and entrance examinations include an interview, a test on Russian history, and a written exposition in Russian language and literature. The Department of Theology is working to establish research laboratories in Orthodox journalism, Orthodox pedagogy, local history studies, and Orthodox theology. Among the department's confessional courses are dogmatic and comparative theology, the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, canon law, liturgical theology, biblical archaeology, Church Slavonic, and the history of missions; local history studies of Sarov and its surroundings are offered as an elective.
A practice of conducting Orthodox services within the institute's walls has taken shape at SarFTI: in May 2006, a moleben (prayer service) for the successful completion of the academic year was held before the icon of the Holy Martyr Tatiana, attended not only by students of the Faculty of Theology but also by students of other faculties; the moleben was conducted by Father Alexander Bryukhovets, a cleric of the All Saints Church.[6][2] The institute's Pre-University Preparation Faculty holds practice testing in the Unified State Exam (EGE) and Basic State Exam (OGE) formats for students in grades 9–11, using tasks developed by the Federal Institute of Pedagogical Measurements.[3] The institute also includes a Faculty of Physics and Technology, a Faculty of Information Technology and Electronics, a Faculty of Economics and Mathematics, a Pre-University Preparation Faculty, and a Faculty of Professional Development, as well as graduate studies and a polytechnic college.[4] Since 2001, the dean of this faculty and head of its department has been Anatoly Petrovich Skripnik, Doctor of Philosophy.[1] The institute provides training in engineering and natural science fields: in particular, from 1998 to 2002, Gennady Ivanovich Shishkin — a specialist in electronic devices, an employee of VNIIEF and VNIITF, and the author of more than 310 published scientific works — taught a lecture course titled "Radiation Resistance of Radio-Electronic Equipment" here as a professor.[1]
Ties to VNIIEF and the Scientific Community
SarFTI is closely integrated into the scientific community of the closed city. Since 2000, the post of Vice-Rector for Science and Extra-Budgetary Activities has been held by Valery Vasilyevich Zorya, who previously worked in VNIIEF structures: from 1992 to 1997 as head of a business center, and from 1997 to 2000 as head of a laboratory and head of a bureau.[1] The institute hosts the Sarov Branch of the Russian Association of Medical Physicists, whose president is the same V. V. Zorya. The institute's teaching and laboratory facilities include laboratories of strong magnetic fields and solid-state physics, of non-stationary hydrodynamic flows, of ultra-strong light-field physics, of nanostructured systems, and of non-destructive testing, as well as an access center to the RFNC-VNIIEF supercomputers. SarFTI students have won prizes at the "Atomiada" spartakiad of workers in nuclear energy, industry, and science, and the university itself was awarded a letter of appreciation by the International Olympiad "IT-Planeta".[4][1]
For the 2023–2024 academic year, SarFTI had 130 state-funded places in IT specialties, placing it among the Nizhny Novgorod universities providing training in information technology.[5]
